Hi everyone, this blog will be an attempt to keep my friends and other site lurkers updated on what’s been going on in our little MB world. I only want to write about newsworthy items relevant to his career and life when it’s appropriate. The main reason I’m doing it is to stop repeating myself and stop having to search for previous posts. Since I’m on the site on a regular basis, I thought it would be helpful. :D Take care and hugs to all, sincerely, Sylvie :D

5 Reasons to Love Michael Bolton's Big, Sexy Valentine's Day Special
Think you know the soft-rock singer? His new Netflix special will give you a hilarious (and possibly disturbing) new perspective
by Andrea Reiher | February 7, 2017 | 1 Comment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you thought A Very Murray Christmas was weird, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special just premiered on Netflix, and it makes Bill Murray‘s 2015 Christmas special look positively normal by comparison. Adult contemporary–pop singer Michael Bolton has long been game to take a few shots at his own public image, and his V-D special is super funny and a huge treat for music lovers.
Here are some of top reasons to watch:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Excellent Musical Moments
Even if Bolton isn’t your favorite singer, there is no doubt the dude can still belt it out at age 63.
In the Netflix special, Bolton takes on everything from Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” to Ray Charles’ “I Got a Woman” to Lonely Island’s “Jack Sparrow” song. Here he is singing with guest Will Forte.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Peak ’90s Bolton
And lest you worry it’s all covers, stay tuned for the latter half of the special, when both “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?” make an appearance.
The special calls it “peak ’90s Bolton,” and it’s spectacular.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Raunchy — But Hilarious — Guest Stars
The plot of the special is that Santa Claus needs Bolton to save Christmas. There’s an abundance of elves who are overproducing toys; therefore he needs Bolton to make a Valentine’s Day special “so sexy that people around the world will be compelled to make love, and 10 months from now there will be 75,000 new babies, and Christmas will be saved.”
In Bolton’s efforts to be sexy, his “orgy” of guest stars sometimes get a little too sexy.
(Thanks, Sarah Silverman and Randall Park — that was terrifying.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Bizarre — But Hilarious — Guest Stars
Chris Parnell drops by as a doctor who specializes in “erotic simulations” — which gets real weird, real quick.
And then Andy Samberg (pictured) plays Kenny G, who initiates a Dueling Banjos situation with Bolton.
Michael Sheen is an abusive, chain-smoking choreographer, who screams at Bolton while trying to teach him the dance moves to “Old Time Rock and Roll.”
Eric André is “Baby Archer,” a guy who wrote his own version of “The Cupid Shuffle” (appropriately titled “The Kupid Shufle”), in a performance that makes it seem like André may actually have had a stroke at one point. He also is very excited about Michael Bolton’s balls.
And Maya Rudolph sings a song entirely about key changes that changes keys more times than you can count. It’s a seriously impressive display of vocal abilities on the part of the Saturday Night Live alum.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Potential for More
Bolton’s insane, but fun special argues for more holiday treats from Netflix. Here’s hoping the streaming giant keeps this tradition alive and gifts subscribers with specials for many holidays to come.

It’s rare that a comedy sketch is so twistily ridiculous that it requires a spoiler warning, but in the spirit of the holidays, I’d lovelovelove if you watched Netflix’s recent Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special before reading any further—or, at least, got past the 20-minute mark, by which point you’ll have seen the 63-year-old singer deadpan his way through a version of Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.” Recapping why Bolton does this is both a time- and fun-suck, but for those who don’t have the time to check it out, here goes: While hosting a cupid-themed telethon, Bolton is suddenly razzed by a group of punks for being uncool; in response, he jumps into a straight-faced rendition of “Rock and Roll,” set in a cornball ’50s diner populated by shades-sporting dancers and giant framed photos of guitars. Midway through the performance, though, we cut unexpectedly to a rehearsal sequence where Bolton and his dancers being are barked into shape by a gruff, chain-smoking Fosse-esque choreographer—played by Michael Sheen—who frantically (and accurately) warns Bolton to be prepared, because the punks “will always show up.”

It’s a great sketch—a little bit stupid, a little bit smart, but mostly just happily stupid-smart. And though Here’s Why This Is Funny explainers are a guaranteed drag, it’s worth pointing out that, while there are numerous reasons why “Rock and Roll” works—the kitsch-perfect production design, Sheen’s nicotine-spittled monomania—all that jazz wouldn’t mean anything without Bolton, who gamely surrenders himself to the proceedings, and winds up giving the show’s most effective performance. Which is surprising, partly because he’s Michael Bolton, and partly because, for the last two decades, we’ve been conditioned to think that the only way celebrities can incorporate themselves into comedy is by either becoming easy punchlines (I’m With Busey, ugh) or by playing jerkier, image-subverting versions of themselves (a semi-recurring plot-ploy on such shows as Larry Sanders, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Extras).
But throughout this hour-long spoof, Bolton—whose comic chops were first hinted at with his Lonely Island-assisted “Jack Sparrow” anthem a few years back—is neither hostage nor ham. Instead, he exudes a sort of knowing, zen-like, trapezoidal squareness; imagine Batman-era Adam West after a single scotch and an hour in the hot tub. And while Sexy certainly caters to his strengths at times (he performs a number of songs, including ’90s hits like “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?”), and occasionally pokes fun at his Clinton-era coif, for most of the special, Michael Bolton can’t just cruise along being Michael Bolton. Instead, he plays a straight-man-in-a-strange-land version of himself, whether he’s hunting for Cialis during a VR-sex escapade, casually wielding a firearm, or giving an earnest tour of his love nest (“designed by clinically insane Swedish architects to encourage optimal lovemaking”).
It’s an irony-free, cruelty-free career-recalibration—and it works especially well in a show like this, which employs Bolton as a sort of bemused wanderer, giving you just enough ace-timing reaction shots and random-croon out-bursts (“Snuggle!”) before the novelty wears thin, and surrounding him with increasingly goofy sketches featuring the likes of Will Forte (playing Michael Fulton, Bolton’s failed twin brother), Andy Samberg (a vengeful Kenny G), and Sarah Silverman and Randall Park (a pair of cheerily bawdy lovebird-songbirds in what feels like a spiritual successor to SNL‘s exquisite “T.T. and Mario” sketch). Sexy was created/produced/directed by Lonely Island and Comedy Bang! Bang!‘s Scott Aukerman, two of modern comedy’s most reliable cameo-cajolers, so they were bound to bring in a few big-name guest stars. What’s really unexpected is that, in doing so, they also managed to temporarily revive the variety show format—a task that’s befuddled everyone from Neil Patrick Harris to Rosie O’Donnell to Maya Rudolph and Martin Short. As it turns out, all you need to make ’em work is some Fosse references, a few erection gags, and a host who’s up for anything. That’s not to say that Netflix shouldn’t look at Sexy‘s success as a reason to get into the song-and-dance business. But if it wants to make Bolton’s wry, weirdo love-in a holiday ritual, this punk will show up.

Interestingly worded article... In any case, I have yet to finish catching up, so might have more news later. Thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie :D
Hi everyone, I’m trying to catch up with the news after a couple of days off the site, so here goes part 1. Michael is doing a Facebook Live from Honolulu tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. HST, to give us a sneak peek from behind the scenes at his concert. I was told this will be 8:00 p.m. EST. Next news item is that Michael will be on Sirius Radio on the 14th also. His guest DJ show airs at 8 am, Noon, 4 pm and 8 pm EST on February 14th. Michael also presented a new video for the 2017 version of “When a man loves a woman”, which is kind of fun, since he technically never did make a video for his original version. Here it is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGfc8VzZCFM
Next, here is a 34 minute + video of Michael, Scott Aukerman and Akiva Schaffer discussing the Netflix special Katia shared with me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCZPM-RRLpQ&feature=youtu.be
Katia also shared another video that seems to be a compilation of snippets from Michael’s “Big sexy Valentine’s day special” lasting 29:21 minutes:
Here’s another really cute one Katia shared of Michael saying “I’m sorry” in several languages, which might be an ad on Netflix:
All right next, Florin has found on Amazon in Japan, a different release of “Songs of cinema”, to be released on February 22, with his version of Leon Russell’s “A song for you” as a bonus track and here’s the link to the Japanese site:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%BD%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0%E3%82%B9-%E3%8...
I guess that answers my question about foreign releases, although I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how many more there’ll be and how many bonus tracks there will also be. Okay, now here’s one I forgot about, an interview with Mario Lopez someone posted on Friday:

I have no details about it and my outdated browser won’t play it. I’ll be back with more news shortly. Thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie :D

Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special ranks in the 50 Best Romantic Movies on Netflix!
Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special is the best new movie or show on Netflix this week. The special premiered on the streaming service on February 7, one week before Love’s big holiday. Accordingly, we added Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special to our ranking of the 50 Best Romantic Movies on Netflix!
As mentioned in the review of the special, we wish Netflix would make more specials like this and do things that networks won’t do. The special was directed by Scott Aukerman of Comedy Bang! Bang! and Akiva Schaffer of The Lonely Island. And, the Valentine’s Day special stars Michael Bolton, Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph, Casey Wilson, Chris Parnell, Eric Andre, Jorma Taccone, Michael Sheen, and Randall Park.
In the special, Michael Bolton hosts a variety special on Valentine’s Day to help people around the world make love and babies so enough babies will be born by Christmas, which helps Santa Clause save Christmas.

It sounds ridiculous, and it is, but it’s also hilarious. It’s like a long, sketch comedy bit turned up to 11 with the big, sexy voice of Michael Bolton. Plus, there’s an ode to Bolton’s favorite film character, Captain Jack Sparrow. If that doesn’t win you over, I don’t know what will!
This is one of the best shows or movies to watch this Valentine’s Day weekend on Netflix. You will not be disappointed if you like Michael Bolton, and I’m pretty sure everybody does!
I'm having trouble copying the link to the article, but at least, I've told you where it comes from. That's the news for now, thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie :D

How the Hell Did Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special Happen?_Vanity Fair
How the Hell Did Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special Happen?
A conversation with Akiva Schaffer and Scott Aukerman, the mad geniuses behind an instant classic.
by Jane Borden February 7, 2017 8:00 am

This February, Michael Bolton is hosting a sexy telethon that’s dedicated to helping you make babies by Christmas. Akiva Schaffer (of The Lonely Island fame) and Scott Aukerman (Comedy Bang! Bang!) created and wrote the special, called, unsurprisingly, Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special, which premieres on Netflix February 7. It also features Fred Armisen, Adam Scott, Sarah Silverman, Maya Rudolph, and at least a dozen other stars—and yes, it is as spectacularly stupid as you want it to be. Here’s everything you need to know, courtesy of Schaffer and Aukerman.
The Lonely Island has lunch with Michael Bolton a few times a year.
Since the gang collaborated on the majestically ear-wormy viral song “Jack Sparrow” for Saturday Night Live in 2011, they’ve stayed in touch. “When we find ourselves in the same town, we go out for drinks or lunch or something,” Schaffer tells Vanity Fair. “It’s always a high point of my year.” At one of these lunches, Bolton mentioned that he might produce a special to coincide with the release of his latest album.
“We started talking about his ‘Jack Sparrow’ character,” Schaffer explains, “and making a comedy special as if it’s from that version of Michael Bolton—very confident, very sexy, and very confident in how sexy he is. Just our dream of who Michael Bolton was without having ever met him. Then that led us to Valentine’s Day, which would obviously be his holiday.” The special takes place in this alt-version of Bolton’s bachelor pad, where he shares his thoughts on romance and invites guests to sing, dance, and share their other talents.

There will be hair jokes.
When the songwriter topped charts in 1989 with “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” his long, wild locks were as recognizable as his voice. Frankly, an audience would feel robbed if there weren’t any gags about them in the special. How did Bolton respond to the jokes? “Stoic resignation,” Aukerman says, half seriously.
“He realized there was no point in fighting it. It was going to happen,” adds Schaffer.
“Comedically, he really trusted us to do right by him,” Aukerman says. “We would read the scripts, and he’d laugh and then wonder why his character would do something like that. I remember at one point he said, ‘Maybe I’ve been hit in the head?’”
“That was his motivation as an actor,” Schaffer adds, laughing. “‘Oh, I know what would make all of this make sense: I’ve been hit in the head.’”
rooke Shields has a filthy line.
How did they get the star on board ? “She begged us, honestly, to say that,” Aukerman jokes. “And we were like, ‘Brooke, come on, you’re America’s sweetheart. We can’t let you say that.’ And she actually smacked Akiva in the face and was like, ‘You’re going to let me say this or else. . . ’ ”
Schaffer interrupts, “She was going to call [Netflix exec] Ted Sarandos and get it all canceled. ‘I’m going to call Teddy S!’ That’s what she called him.”
“So it was really hard for us,” Aukerman adds, “because we didn’t want to include that kind of filth in the special.”
Kenny G is a mensch.
The prince of smooth jazz, who is accustomed to mocking his persona, makes a charming appearance. “He is a delightful guy,” Aukerman says, “who really wanted to help, and who made himself available. The one contingency he had, he wanted to record the saxophone solos that Andy Samberg pretended to perform. Andy mimed playing the saxophone, and then Kenny took that performance and delivered the most beautiful, melodious solos that we could never have replicated on our own. That was a big thrill for us.”

Bolton’s voice is still arresting.
Several numbers from his new album are peppered through the special—for fans, and also for those who don’t know they’re fans yet.
“When we had him singing ‘How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,’ there were people on the set who weren’t alive when the Michael Bolton explosion first happened,” Aukerman recalls. “They were all blown away.”
“That’s why he was in ‘Jack Sparrow’ to begin with, why ‘Jack Sparrow’ worked, and why we were excited for the whole thing,” Schaffer says. “Among all the jokes, you kind of forget. And then every time he starts singing you’re just like, ‘holy crap.’ It’s a one-in-a-million talent that he truly has.”
Aukerman and Schaffer still have no Valentine’s plans.
They both feel certain that Bolton, on the other hand, has a firm game plan.
“He laid the groundwork for his Valentine’s Day plans months, if not years, in advance,” Aukerman jokes. “I would imagine he has intricate Rube Goldberg–like plans that involve juggling a variety of women. And he probably starts early. It’s like Christmas to him. He can’t sleep the night before; he’s too excited. He wakes up at five in the morning, wakes up everyone and just can’t wait to start the day.”
After the shoot, Schaffer asked to keep the erotic portraiture.
Two large paintings—of people mid-act—were made for the special, specifically as punch lines. Schaffer wanted to hang them in his office, as memorabilia—but now he’s changed his mind. “When I saw them off the set, I realized they are enormous,” Schaffer says. “I don’t think I have the wall space in my office for giant painted pornography.”
“There was a lot of discussion about the nude paintings. We went through many options,” says Aukerman. Then he deadpans, “Actually, now that I think about it, I was just looking at porn.”
“You did look at porn for research,” Schaffer adds. “I really want to thank you again for doing it.”
“No problem,” Aukerman replies. “I might do some post research.”
“Well, you found an interest, which is great,” says Schaffer. “That’s what’s cool about doing a special: it’s only a few months of work, but you get to learn about different things and maybe find new interests.”
“It might last a lifetime,” Aukerman says.
“That’s amazing,” Schaffer replies. “I’m happy for you.”

Mushy love and sappy romance are synonymous with soft-rock balladeer Michael Bolton.
So it is very fitting that the multi-Grammy Award-winner is not only performing in Costa Mesa on the weekend before Valentine’s Day, but is also releasing his new album, “Songs of Cinema,” on Friday – complete with sentimental cover tunes apt for setting a romantic mood.
With more than 53 million albums and singles sold worldwide and a career that spans more than four decades, Bolton has become a household name in the pop-rock genre. He will bring his signature raspy vocals to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Friday and Saturday with the Pacific Symphony, led by conductor Stuart Chafetz.
“I absolutely love performing with a symphony orchestra. It just brings another rich, beautiful dimension to being onstage, sonically, visually and emotionally,” said Bolton. “I like to make the concert into a real musical journey and tell stories along the way. The audience likes to chime in and we always have a lot of fun together.”
Both evenings will feature songs from his new album, but Bolton said he is always conscious of performing what his fans want to hear – his greatest hits. Known for ballads such as “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “That’s What Love Is All About,” the singer, who has 27 albums in his catalog, said each of his songs has a special meaning for him and his fans.
Because of this, Bolton said, he understands the importance of performing the songs his audience knows while introducing new selections to keep his concerts fresh.
“I often get messages and letters about certain songs that marked important moments in (fans’) lives and so they are coming to celebrate those experiences,” said Bolton. “I also like to introduce my audience to new musical genres and guests. Every time I record a new album, we incorporate a few of those songs into the set so the repertoire is always evolving.”
For many longtime artists, staple songs tend to feel monotonous after years of performing them, but Bolton said his classics have their own story, which makes them extra valuable for him to perform.
“‘How Am I Supposed to Live Without You’ is especially emotional for me because it was a song I wrote when I was a struggling artist, and when Laura Branigan’s recording made it to number one, that song changed my life and the life of my family,” said Bolton. “When I recorded it later and it went to number one again, earning me a Grammy, well, my career was off. Everything changed.”
Bolton’s 1991 Grammy Award-winning cover song “When a Man Loves a Woman” also holds a special place in his heart.
“It represented me standing up to my label, who didn’t want me to put the song on the album because of the Percy Sledge version that was still being played on the radio,” said Bolton, “But I went with my instinct, which was to pay homage to one of my heroes, stand up to the mic and give it all I had. That song became my second Grammy and my biggest hit.”
Bolton is very active on social media, consistently posting photos and updates of his whereabouts on Twitter and Facebook, and even asking for feedback from his fans last year about which songs he should record for his 10-track album, which features tributes to iconic movies. Songs include “As Time Goes By” from “Casablanca,” “I’ve Got a Woman” from “Ray,” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Social media has been amazing. At first I admit I was a bit skeptical and maybe surprised to see what fans wanted to hear or see, like me with my cup of coffee,” said Bolton, “But it’s really cool to be able to get their personal comments and also with my recent album ‘Songs of Cinema,’ to get their input in what they would like to listen to next.”
The album also features a duet of “I Will Always Love You” with Dolly Parton (from “The Bodyguard”), which Bolton said was a particular honor because she wrote the song. He has revealed a playful side to his career, like his “Saturday Night Live” digital short with Lonely Island’s “Jack Sparrow” – which is also featured on the new album – and the 2015 “Funny or Die” video in which he pokes fun at himself as Michael Bolton in the movie “Office Space.”
On Tuesday, Netflix will release the new variety special “Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special,” which features the singer performing classic hits among a variety of sketches with popular comedians, including Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone, Sarah Silverman, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph and Casey Wilson.
Although he has had fun with the comedy bits, Bolton said he stays focused on his music career, consistently writing and touring. At 63, he said his best advice is “don’t ever give up” and his fans can expect “more music, more television, more comedy and more live performances” in the years to come.

Lucky Michael being there and being able to hear Bryn Terfel: wish I could be there for both! :D Next article is coming up, be right back. Sylvie :D
HiCanadian fans, my friend Katia shared this article with me, which basically lists the new Netflix Canada programming for February, with a short description of Michael’s “Big sexy Valentine’s day special” and it is in French. However, this should reassure anyone who thought they might not be able to watch. Note that only the listing is in French. That’s the news for now, thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie :D
