Hi everyone, I'm feeling whimsical today and thought I'd start a new blog all about my music discoveries, opinions, news etc. My news are based on what I hear on the radio and/or find by accident on either Amazon or YouTube so don't set your clock by my findings! lol I just want to talk about music, because music is like oxygen to me and I've been, ever since I was a little girl, a music "pusher". :D If you're a music lover, hope you enjoy reading or feel Free to bring in your own discoveries, especially if you’re passionate about them. Hope you enjoy my choices. Take care and hugs to all, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi everyone, I know it’s been too long since I’ve posted and this isn’t my regular kind of posting. To make a very long story short, I was searching for our Michael’s version of “Close to  you” from the movie “Fathers and daughters” and fell upon this movie clip:

‪‎Padri e Figlie - "Close to you" - La canzone che li legherà per sempre. CLIP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YesBrh8Ldr0

How adorable is that? XD Anyway,  it seems Michael is singing to this track recorded by Richard Clayderman at least 4 years ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dchGnIvj68c

According to my limited research, it seems Mr Clayderman did an entire tribute to the Carpenters album and I think I’ll check it out. Thanks for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hey ya peops, happy “Back to the future” day! I’ve been meaning to post this song for a few weeks now, because I’ve always loved it and it started playing in a commercial I keep hearing, but sadly haven’t registered what it’s for... XD In any case, here are the fabulous Huey Lewis & the news  with “Back in time”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXN6tgE4g_4

FYI, it’s BTTF day because in part 2 of the trilogy, Marty and Doc go  exactly 30 years to the future, which falls exactly on October  21 2015. It’s one of our family’s favorites and hope you enjoy it too. Thanks for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi again all, in the spirit of trying to clean up my backlog, Here’s a fun song I heard in a recent commercial for a washing machine with a built-in sink, of all things. I believe the original was by the Marvelows and it’s called “I do”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiMtoIZOq0U

When I first heard this song, I thought it sounded like a fun oldies cover and I guess I was right. The first version I ever heard was the J Geils band cover version of “I do”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7S5s9dOI6w

A fun song to accompany you on errands today, I know it puts a spring in my step when I do, so hope it does for you too. :D Thanks for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi everyone, well I have an armload of links today, mostly thanks to my First Nation station. The reception is kind of iffy, but the contents sounds like every member of the station has brought their own records from home to play them and it’s a very cozy musical atmosphere for me.  Most often, I haven’t heard these songs in decades, so it’s truly refreshing. All right, let’s start with one that I was kind of on the fence about back then, but it fits the mood of holding on to what’s left of the summer, Paul Simon “Slip slidin’ away”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_H-LY4Jb2M

Here’s another one I hadn’t heard in ages, in a similar end of summer theme and strangely, the only song I can appreciate from Neil Young” “Harvest moon”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2MtEsrcTTs

He of course has a very distinctive tone, which I can only take in small doses, but I love the feel of this song. Next, another one from the homestack, Skylark’s “Wildflower”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ8n_Esop5I

So now let’s move on to a few covers.. These came also from CKRK and were dug up from the early 70’s/late 60’s stack. First, Andy Kim’s cover of the Ronettes’ “Be my baby”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Y1g-odUrus

It gives it a bit more edge, without messing with the feel of the original, although the Ronettes version is more soulful. All right, next is one our Michael covered in 1975, the Eagles’ Joe Walsh with “Rocky mountain way”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt75y38J00s

I must say, I quite enjoy the tight arrangement on this version... Next one took me by surprise since I’d never really heard the music of Vanilla Fudge before. According to Wiki, they were known to do psychedelic covers, which gave a completely new dimension to the originals. First, their version of “You keep me hanging on”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdLRoOYk50o

Wiki says VF was the bridge between psychedelia and hard rock. The organ gives an interesting flavor and I was thinking the lead singer Mark Stein’s phrasing must have inspired David Bowie. I learned that in 1969, Led Zeppelin opened for them, which is pretty amazing. Speaking of which, here is Vanilla Fudge’s version of the LedZep song “All of my love”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsIRFvEnlNg

OK a last one from Vanilla Fudge, just as interesting stylishly and pretty different from any other version I’ve heard before, especially the original by Noel Harrison,   Vanilla Fudge’s rendition of “Windmills of your mind”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxthq9AOWoo

Well, one down/751 more to go, but I’ll leave you be for now. Thanks very much for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi everyone, wow, it’s been too long since I’ve posted here. Frankly, I have a few posts in process, but remaining true to the title of this blog, I shall post them when I have a bit more time to elaborate with individual song discoveries. Today, browsing through new releases on my local music store site, I read this title that spoke to me: “Yours, dreamily” by the Arcs and for the heck of it, I listened to samples and wasn’t disappointed. Check it out for yourself:

http://www.archambault.ca/the-arcs-yours-dreamily-ACH003739405-en-pr

I couldn’t believe this wasn’t the new Black Keys album, because it sounded so much like “Turn Blue” stylishly. A quick skim on Wiki stated that indeed, the lead singer of this band is Dan Auerbach, who’s the lead singer of the Black Keys. Apparently, this started as a side project for him, but he ended up collaborating with other members of the band. I only skimmed through the Black Keys Wiki page, but there didn’t seem to be a mention of breaking up, nor any mention of the Arcs. In any case, this is a happy coincidence and this album sounds very interesting, so I’ll keep you posted when I hear more. Thanks for reading and listening if you did, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi everyone, simply a quick link today. You know when a band is really successful, but for some reason, it doesn’t do really anything for you, except for this one song? That’s what today’s entry is about. There is nothing wrong with the band Simple Minds and I do think some of their songs are okay, but the one song that’s interesting enough to grab my attention is, simply, “Someone, somewhere in summertime”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c36bOnns2EA
It does bring back the feeling of summer, the minute I hear it. On this cool June morning, that was what the weatherman ordered! Thanks to my NRJ radio station for playing a clip of that one. Thanks for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi all, well I got a whole lot of soul for you tonight homies! Lol  I have to thank my Classic R&B and Soul channel again. It always seems to start with one song, then I get tangled in YouTube suggestions... :D All right, my first suggestion is this lovely man whom I don’t know much about musically, but when he opened his mouth, magic happened. This is Donny Hathaway with “Little ghetto boy”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkUNp__vwRM

Just beautiful, well-measured phrasing and modulation. Now here’s a surprise I couldn’t pass up;  Donny Hathaway’s different rendition  of “I believe to my soul”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2t4nnGfudI

I say it’s different because the one I know and love is by good old Ray Charles “I believe to my soul”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3617vhFr_lY

Funny as I listened to Donny’s version, I expected the: “...when you know my name is Ray”... :D According to the movie “Ray”,Ray did his own backups on this one, because the Raylettes were being difficult when this was recorded. :D It’s just a cool song to listen to... OK, I thought I’d posted the next one but hadn’t. This is in my top Motown songs of all-time and I’ve also heard it you know where; the Temptations and the Supremes with the delicious “I'm Gonna Make You Love Me"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r28-9kh4bhA

I so love this song! While searching on YouTube, I found this version with the Temptations alone, from the Ed Sullivan show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_51wA3xEgk

So well, pardon the pun, but I was tempted to add a bonus so here it is, the Temptations with “Since I lost my baby”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEym6eJ8fa0

Ah yeah, time to grab my Temps greatest hits CD and prove my worth. Thanks for sharing this soul interlude with me, for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi everyone,  today I bring you a wonderfully evocative new to me version of the old rock classic “Blue Moon” by the Mavericks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bKUBNFhW3g

When I first heard it, I thought the lead singer sounded very much in the spirit of Chris Isaak and definitely inspired by Roy Orbison. Incidentally, this version is from the soundtrack of “Apollo 13” and I actually like it better than the Chris Isaak version I heard on YouTube. I looked it up on Wiki and had no idea the song dated from 1934! I know and love several versions of it like Nat King Cole’s as well as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Mel Torme etc. I seem to remember the first time I’d heard it was on the “Grease” soundtrack by Sha Na Na, then years later by Cybill Shepherd of all people on the “Moonlighting”" series, but the one that  helped me realize the power of a good song with inventive production was the 1961 version from the Marcels

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0fy1HeJv80

Talk about knocking a song out for a loop! Well anyway, that’s it for now. Thanks for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi everyone, well I don’t know if our Galaxy/Stingray channels are digging deaper in musical vaults lately, but they are indeed unearthing some serious gems from my youth. Here’s another one I hadn’t heard in decades. The Canadian group is called A Foot In Cold Water and their 1972 song is “(Make me do) anything you want”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B0DkombrdI

I think I shall put these babies on a wonderful new compilation and call it “CKGM moments”. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, isn’t it? I heard on the radio a few weeks back that according to a study, the average person stops being hungry for new musical discoveries at age 33 and prefers listening to music of their youth. As for me, I suppose that leaves me eternally stuck at 32... XD On that happy note, there is no shame in polishing old trophys, as long as you keep working towards new ones: thought for the day. Thanks for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi everyone, today’s entry focuses on the comfort of old feel-good songs and in keeping up with this blog’s theme, songs I surprisingly forgot to add. :D So the first one I’ve heard on Galaxy/Stingray Classic R&B & Soul channel, is from a band with a pretty generic name, The Real Thing, which I was amazed to find out is a British 70’s soul band from Liverpool of all places! Their song “You, to me are everything” was their most successful international hit, scoring #28 on Billboard’s R&B singles chart. Here it is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT1iDKkZNYU
The reason The Real Thing caught my ear is that their song reminded me of one of my tip top favorite dance soul songs from the 70’s, Johnny Bristol’s “Hang on in there baby”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKsAgXH9ci4
Ahh man, this song has everything that’s pleasing to the ear about 70’s soul: an elegant but infectious beat, the soaring airy “soul violins”, the cool bass paired with Wa-Wa pedal sound, the smooth but tight backups and great cool vocals. It’s the kind of song you want to take a big “bite” out of and let it melt in your ear… I had this song on a vintage tape with no name or title, but found it thanks to YouTube a couple of years ago. These songs just conjure up a warm feeling you can hardly put in words, except that this is just chocolate for the soul you just want to wallow in.. :D . OK, I’d almost forgotten about my second suggestion… :D This one is in another rhelm, but still very cool. I’ve heard this one on Syrius Radio and is the soul original version, Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters’ song “Cry baby”:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBVFcnbAz28
The one I was familiar with is of course, the Janis Joplin version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDIaDS9HhMw
…which I first heard in the movie “Look who’s talking” of all places! Lol Janis did a terrific job on that one… Wow, seriously, I wonder if there’s an encyclopedia of soul cover songs… If there isn’t, maybe I should write one! XD Well anyway, thanks very much for indulging me. Thanks for reading and listening, sincerely, Sylvie <3
