Hello everybody.   I'm a newbie to this forum, but not to being a huge fan of Michael.  I've been a fan for 19 years now :)  I love his origional pieces, but he is so darn good at covering the classics too.   I wish I could put a bug in his ear and have him record two of my favorite songs.  "Song to the Siren" by Tim Buckley, and " I Don't Need No Doctor" by Ray Charles.  That one would fit beautifully on his blues album waiting in the wings.  :)   Do any of you have a wish list for him to cover?       Payten

Hi again Payten, I’ve thought about it and there really are too many songs I’d like Michael to cover so I thought I’d just pick a few at random. There are way too many Ray Charles songs I’d like him to cover but I’d love to hear what Michael would do with “A song for you”. There are a lot of Marvin Gaye songs I’d love to hear by Michael also. I’ve always thought the song “You” was screaming his name, but I’m not sure it would suit today’s vocal range. I’d love to have him record “What’s going on” because I’ve heard him sing it in a televised charity event once. I would also loooooove to hear him sing “Distant lover” because it’s my favorite Marvin Gaye song and if you look up the live version on Youtube, you’d know why, but I doubt he’d record it because Michael McDonald beat him to it, sadly. Also, the Otis Redding songs “I’ve been loving you too long” and “Dreams to remember” I think would be great additions to a blues album! And as long as we’re talking about the blues album, I’d love to have Michael record “gimme some lovin’” that he used to have in his setlist in the mid 80’s and this fantastic Etta James song called “I just want to make love to you”… Phew! I’d also love to hear what Michael would do with a song I know by Al Green but I know has been recorded by artists of various genres: “For the good times” and another song that I absolutely love both the James Ingram and Tony Bennett renditions of called “How do you keep the music playing”… That’s just off the top of my head! Lol I also suggested once to Michael’s brother Orrin that they’d do a duet of the Sam & Dave song “When something’s wrong with my baby”. I’d love to hear them sing together. Well, I think I’ll stop now and leave room for other people to post their ideas… Take care Payten and thanks for starting this thread! Hugs, sincerely, Sylvie from Canada
Yeah Robin, the other Robin told me all about it, it sounded wonderful! Wish I would have been there too... How about you Robin, what songs would you like Michael to cover? Just curious. Take care. Hugs, sincerely, Sylvie from Canada
Hi again Payten, I’m sorry to be taking so much room but I forgot one song that should have definitely been on my ultimate list. It’s an old but absolutely wonderful Sam Cooke song called “A change is gonna come” that I would just adore to have Michael record. There have been so many versions of this song, some of them nice, some of them not as nice. I own several different versions of it myself. A friend had me hear once Michael’s live performance of it, the first version I’d ever heard and that song is a song and a half! Thanks for indulging me. To apologize first for taking so much room, and second not to have been able to have you hear the ALW songs, I remembered afriend send me this ad for the ALW show as a wave file. I’ll try and upload it for you. “Gethsemane” is not on it but hope this is a nice consolation prize! Take care. Hugs, sincerely, Sylvie from Canada

I would love to hear him sing Otis Redding's 'Love Man'. I love that song and to hear Michael sing it would be amazing! xxx
I'd like to see him cover something by Marvin Gaye..
I'm certainly not sure if he has or not, but I would love Michael to do a couple over covers from Curtis Stigers. "I Wonder Why", "You're all that matters to me". The thing is you have to think of songs that are best suited to his voice, it's easy to say make the song your own etc. But no matter what, the original is always remembered. There are those cover artists though, Michaels being one that can take an already recorded song and just nail it big time and make it sound better than it's original artists.
Hi Antony, I haven’t seen you here before so I’ll welcome you to the forum. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t familiar with Curtis Stigers and I looked your suggestions up on Youtube. The songs aren’t bad… I can certainly hear where you’re going with the style and the style would suit Michael’s voice. But then again, would we have ever thought 5 years ago that Michael would be covering Frank Sinatra? If Michael can sing “New York New York”, I think he could sing anyone’s signature song, he sure did with Percy Sledge! As he said it himself, it’s not about singing it better, it’s about giving it your own flavor, as in:”This version is great, but have you heard this other version?”, type of thing. Well, thanks for the new discovery Antony, take care. Hugs, sincerely, Sylvie from Canada
Thank you for your warm welcome Sylvie. Yes agree with what you said, he took the classics of Sinatra and certainly made them his own. And that's the key to covering original songs, not to imitate them and make them sound as they did when the original artist sung them. But to put your own stamp on them and make them your own, so the fans/audience remembers your version rather than it being a rubbish second class version. I remember listening to "Knock on Wood" and thinking this is the best version I've listened to period, and thing I like about Michaels is the difference in his voice compared to other singers. Michael has that ruggedness in his voice, and when he does do a cover he moulds that song to suit his voice. And that certainly takes some doing, and for him to pull it off surely shows the man's talent.
Hi again Antony, about the MB Sinatra songs, first, I absolutely love what he did with "My funny Valentine", because it's the sweetest rendition I've ever heard and he did make it his own. But let me tell you something else: Michael succeeded in making me love the song "The girl from Ipanema" and that was no small task! I have both the Kenny G version and aclassical cellist Julian Lloyd Webber's version and don't care for either of them, even though I love both musicians. I'm sorry to say I've always thought that song was the ultimate in "cheese" but Michael made me love it. I rest my case! lol Take care Antony. Hugs, sincerely, Sylvie from Canada
I dont believe that Michael does sing Gethsemane being on the ALW recording that I have.

Love Jennifer XXX
Hi Jennifer. I know he does sing it. I've seen several mentions of it in reviews. I soooooo wish a recording of it did exist. That is my favorite song from JCS. How did you get a recording of the other ALW songs? If you don't mind me being nosey :) Payten
Hi Payten,
