Hi everyone, I'm feeling whimsical today and thought I'd start a new blog all about my music discoveries, opinions, news etc. My news are based on what I hear on the radio and/or find by accident on either Amazon or YouTube so don't set your clock by my findings! lol I just want to talk about music, because music is like oxygen to me and I've been, ever since I was a little girl, a music "pusher". :D If you're a music lover, hope you enjoy reading or feel Free to bring in your own discoveries, especially if you’re passionate about them. Hope you enjoy my choices. Take care and hugs to all, sincerely, Sylvie <3

Hi all, well following yesterday’s eventsand helped with today’s comment from a well-intentionned friend, I thought I’d do a little hope transplant today. I have the water, so I just need to get a little sunshine to help it grow. So here it comes! First, the best kind of sunshine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_XMfrSzOAU
Our Michael from a 1991 Disney “For our children” special and very special indeed. Okay, we’ll need a lot of sunshine for this hope plant, so here’s more, provided this time by Olivia Newton-John:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFHFH3eriv8
The song “Let it shine” from her album “Clearly love”. OMG, checking suggestions as usual on YouTube, I found a perfect fit for today’s mood, though not complying completely with the plant theme, but certainly with the need for hope, my BFF Olivia with “Hey Mr Dreammaker”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d55_uJACfYY
Good Lord, I can’t believe my luck with suggestions this morning: to support the “send me a dream, this one is over...” lyrics of this last one, here’s a strong support system for it, again by Olivia, “Please don’t keep me waiting”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FclDw9TfaoM
lol I’m sorry but I couldn’t resist! XD All right, returning to my plant motif and things growing, how about asweet little memory to bring a little freshness to these proceedings? One of the sweetest musical memories, with nothing attached, but the memory of CKGM, the greatest AM radio station in Montreal in the 70’s, on today, (from what I’ve heard) international radio day. What a coincidence! So here it comes, Edison Lighthouse with “Love grows (where my Rosemary goes):

I think I’ll buy a new plant this weekend and will monitor how long it takes for hope to grow. Thanks everyone for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi everyone, today’s entry will simply be about today, the Feb 12 2014 playlist. First, Daryl Hall & John Oates “Missed opportunity”:

From the same album called “Ooh yeah!”, “I’m in pieces”:

Hi all, today’s entry is all about simply marveling in a great song and a terrific performance. I heard this on our “Jukebox oldies” station tonight, it’s the incomparable Aretha Franklin with “I Say a little prayer”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtBbyglq37E
This song is warm like a summer morning. You listen to the words and Aretha’s effortless delivery is rising like steam off a fresh brewed cup of coffee. I imagine her getting up and sitting at her make-up table, in front of the mirror, with bright sunshine starting to stream through her venetian blind and you see it in her face how she’s thinking of her man. I love how perfectly her vocals and her backups vocals are balanced and it’s just a religious experience to intake it all! Lol Long live the Queen, that’s all I can say... Thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi all, just one link today. I’ve been hearing this song on the T-Mobile commercial on TV for a couple of weeks now, hoping to catch some lyrics to search YouTube, but my son rescued me with his Shazam app, God bless him. Seriously, I need me one of those! :D All right, the song is “New direction” by the Black Lips:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idf9bIl1_qI
It’s another one that fits in my “scruffys” category. I realized I really do enjoy what’s labelled as “garage band rock”: very raw and unsophisticated, but we all need to release and leave the brain on “park” once in a while. The only research I did on these guys was on my library web site and found a 2009 album and the 2011 album from which this song is from. I’ll keep you posted on study results if need be. Thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi all, I was going to wait until I studied this group a bit further, but checking out their Wiki page, it sounds like it might take a while to make a comprehensive assessment, so I’ll just share this one song for now. My son told me about the group Arctic Monkeys over the past few months and I was curious, because he was consistently listening to them and the bits I heard sounded good. I still haven’t taken the time for the whole album, but this song is pretty recurrent on my pop radio station and now, I can’t get it out of my head. :D It’s called: “Do I wanna know”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpOSxM0rNPM
The first thing that jumped at me was how much the lead singer Alex Turner reminds me of David Bowie, in his tone and phrasing, though David is not listed as an influence, though John Lennon is. Apparently, all their albums have a different sound, so they’re difficult to categorize, aside from being an indi rock band and being compared to the Black Keys. From what I’ve heard of their latest album “AM”, they somehow have the feel of 80’s glam rock bands to me, but edgeier: I like it!FYI, according to their Wiki page, they first came into public awareness through MySpace, thanks to a fan promoting them, their first album was the fastest selling album EVER, their 5 albums went straight to #1 in the U.K. and they are critically acclaimed: pretty good credentials! :D That’s it for now, thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi all, due to my relentless sharing of music I enjoy to anyone and everyone, my fellow music enthusiast son-in-law and daughter, decided to give me a Charles Aznavour CD for Xmas, after I shared my newly found fascination for Jacques Brel. Funny enough, I enjoyed Charles Aznavour’s voice and delivery , even as a child for some reason, though his music wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. I think I just enjoyed the nicely melodic and nostalgic sound. Anyway, I was looking forward to listening to my new CD for this song called “Que c’est triste Venise”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiNNSqICBag
...which is surprisingly not on my CD and neither is his song “Mourir d’aimer”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA2hY8opncY
So Gosh, I’m thrown into another library quest, though I have no intention of making it an archeological dig like I did with Mr Brel. You never know with me, but I’m just so very cozy with my friend Jacques that I know he’ll just be a new interesting guest and that’s it. In any case, hope you enjoy these 2 selections, thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi again everyone, now I want to share a song I stumbled upon while channel-surfing this morning. My radio listening formats vary a lot from week to weekend and back. Anyway, I sometimes come across songs or beats or voices I enjoy instantly and this one goes in the “beat” section. It’s “Love me again” by John Newman :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1CYi_N9AfE
I’m just so very glad that it’s often this easy to find a song on YouTube just by typing in lyrics! I was listening to it again and thinking how this guy’s voice isn’t going to last very long if he keeps on singing this way... Anyway, it’s the first time I hear this guy and his song and frankly, I think there’s nothing like a song with a familiar throwback feel to kick off the week, hope you enjoy. Thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi everyone, I wanted to bring to your attention this new song by U2: "Invisible" - Bank of America in support of (RED)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEyKdpsHKy0
There’s a link on that page to download it for free from ITunes today February 3. From what I heard on the radio, for every free download, Bank of America will donate a dollar for AIDS research. Good cause, great free song, so why not? Take care and hugs to all, thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi everyone, I’ve been meaning to write about my latest find and newly discovered appreciation for this terrific artist: Crystal Bowersox. I thought I had elaborated on it before, but apparently only mentioned one song off her debut album in May of last year. I will remedy that. I have to say that Crystal was one of my favourites during the 2010 season of “American Idol”, but didn’t know if I wanted to buy Crystal’s CD’s when released, uncertain of what the industry would do with her. Of course, we all know that A I alumni’s first albums aren’t always conclusive as to what fits the artist, although I personally quite enjoyed “Farmer’s daughter”. I found Crystal’s album while checking out Jessica Sanchez’s first album. So anyway, the one I want to discuss today is Crystal’s second album: “All that for this” released last year. What attracted me to Crystal’s album first was her unpretentious and very organic vocal style. It’s folky/bluesy/pop, with a hint of country, but very fresh, compared to today’s pop radio. Her tone and phrasing remind me a little bit of Natalie Merchant for some reason, though I personally feel Crystal’s is more genuine and effortless. Crystal is very much her own person, vocally and style-wise though. I think that’s the thing that struck me about her. I’ve read that she wrote most of the songs on the album, which confirms to me that there is something very special about her. I love the entire album, but will share 3 of my favourites. The first one is called “Someday”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sVJLYlqE-A
It’s a terrific song about picking up the pieces of a relationship. I must say I really enjoy the studio arrangement though, which I can’t seem to find on YouTube. Okay, my second favourite is called “I am”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYVXiLZydgw
This is another one that I really love the studio arrangement, because it’s airy and evocative and reminds me of a specific sound I really love about some Nada Surf songs like “Blonde on blonde”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwKNDoHtUTM
But back to Crystal, my third pick is the song “Stitches”, recorded with Jakob Dylan, son of you know who and performed here with her husband Bryan Walker:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HDuTAZc_iM
A very nice duet, terrific lyrics. I can’t say enough good things about this album, seriously! Guess that’s it for now. Thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi everyone, talking to a friend about establishing life priorities, I was reminded of the “Serenity” prayer and this sweet musical version of it by Olivia Newton-john:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENITFTUFA4U
Well not the actual prayer word for word, but the essence about accepting the things you can’t change, changing the things you can and having the wisdom to know the difference. This song is off one of my favourite albums of Olivia’s: “Stronger than before”. It’s a terrific album filled with empowering songs that I heard Olivia wrote during and/or after her experience with breast cancer. One of my favourites off the album is a song actually written by her daughter Chloe Lattanzi. It’s called “Can I trust your arms”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5taRKxjjtA
I adore the lyrics of that song, because the narrator is torn between trying to be strong and letting someone in to help and support in a moment of weakness, it’s really beautiful and as usual, Olivia sings like an angel... :D All the other songs on the album have their own inspirational message, but my other favourite on the album is her revised bossanova version of her classic “Don’t stop believin’”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysfN7l4-kNc
This version is like a reunion with an old friend you haven’t seen in 20 years, but you pick up the friendship as if no time had passed... That’s the way I feel when I pick up an Olivia CD. :D Hope you enjoy, thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
