Hi everyone, I'm feeling whimsical today and thought I'd start a new blog all about my music discoveries, opinions, news etc. My news are based on what I hear on the radio and/or find by accident on either Amazon or YouTube so don't set your clock by my findings! lol I just want to talk about music, because music is like oxygen to me and I've been, ever since I was a little girl, a music "pusher". :D If you're a music lover, hope you enjoy reading or feel Free to bring in your own discoveries, especially if you’re passionate about them. Hope you enjoy my choices. Take care and hugs to all, sincerely, Sylvie <3

All right, part deux of Canada Day! Here are some pop 80’s tunes. A ubiquitous staple of the oldies lunch hour but I don’t mind, Paul Janz “Close my eyes”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI2fRmSQg8k
Now one of my favourites from Gino Vanelli, “Wild horses”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zD77kyQYifc
He had more popular songs like “I just wanna stop”, “Wheels of life” in the 70's and “Hurts to be in love” in the 80's, but I love the sound of that one better. Okay, this next one I think was the most popular song from Men Without Hats “The safety dance”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjPau5QYtYs
I also loved their song “Pop goes the world” and my hubby loved the video. :D Now here are 2 Canadian acts, the Payolas and Carol Pope from Rough Trade with “Never said I loved you”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxcieByT28
The Payolas were known for "Eyes of a stranger" and Rough Trade were known for “High-school confidential”. Now here’s a group who I would imagine came from Niagara, Honeymoon Suite had songs like “Burning in love”, “New girl now”, “Stay in the light” and my favourite, “Wave Babies”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DORSyDaWN8
Another sweet little pop band I’d put in the same bag would be Glass Tiger and their first hit, “Don’t forget me when I’m gone”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jx6_-urg5fo
In the recording, you can hear Bryan Adams giving them a hand. Speaking of which, I couldn’t begin to list my favourites from, but here’s my sister’s favorite from Bryan, “Everything I do”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGoWtY_h4xo
He’s one of the few Canadian artists I truly admire. Okay, now for just a touch of comedy starting with Bob and Doug McKenzie with “Take off” featuring another great Canadian rock voice of Geddy Lee from Rush:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BFPt001PYU
...from the comedy show “SCTV” with Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. Here’s another duo, Bowser & Blue with my favourite of theirs, :”Polka dot undees”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRSnND5rknY
It’s a very Bob Dylan-type song and what’s funny about it is what they don’t say... :D Now here’s another group that’s considered to be on the funny side, Barenakedladies with the song that introduced me to them, “One week”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC_q9KPczAg
I’ve talked about them earlier here, but I also like their song “Jane”, sung by the other lead singer and “Pinch Me”, which is a cute one too. Well OMG, looks like I’ll have to put a part 3! I'm a poet and I don't know it! ;D
Hi all, well since this is Canada Day eh, I’m going to show my pride in our Canadian music and bring you some of my Canadian favourites. Let’s start with the oldies. I remember listening to these guys, the Guess Who throughout my childhood on good old CKGM in Montreal and though I enjoyed “American Woman” and a few others, this’ll always be my favourite:
The Guess Who, “These eyes” 1968
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uU0MNDKv7g
Now this song I remember from my sister’s first communion party:
Bachman Turner Overdrive “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9S93bE06H0
I also enjoyed “Taking care of business” from them too. Now this next one is certainly one of my top 10 Canadian songs, April Wine "You won’t dance with me" 1977
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djNxY-HDxvY
They were terrific at ballads but a great rock group too. Scanning YouTube, I was reminded of this one I really love, The Stampeders “Sweet city woman”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IRjl3SWC2U
Now getting in my teen years, I got into a lot of different styles. This little group was a lot of fun, with many upbeat songs with a throwback feel, Doug & the Slugs with my favourite song: “Too bad”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzocrN1zUE8
Of course, I had my disco phase with songs like “Love is in the air” by Martin Stevens:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT_u6w7gq0U
This one by the duo of Denis and Denise Lepage known as Lime, “Your love:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUZrWAV5AJA
...and this one by another husband and wife duo who had their own TV show, The Raes with “A little lovin’”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoQT3RY5FFU
Ah, the memories! :D Okay, now a few rock tunes from the 80’s. First, one of the best Canadian groups of the 80’s, Loverboy, with my favourite: “Lucky ones”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eefAdADos4w
Love that guitar! That was off their album “Get lucky”. A bit more rock with this great song from Aldo Nova called “Fantasy”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_v0Dmf3KDk
I once heard this guy open for Hall & Oates in 1981, phew! Now here’s a little Aldo Nova bonus, “Lay your love on me”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li1nFXRGZFw
And you ask: why this bonus, since I never knew this song in the 80’s? Simply because if you listen closely to the chorus, you can hear our own Michael singing backup! :D This guy didn’t do too bad: he ended up playing guitar for Céline Dion and that’s all I’ll say about it. All right, here’s one that’s apparently classified as “glam rock”, Sweeney Todd singing “ Roxy Roller”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10_QxxDT2KQ
This band was lead by Nick Gilder who popularized the song “Hot child in the city”. Now I think I’ll need a part deux to make sure it fits here, be right back!
Hi all, today’s entry started out with wanting to share this sweet oldies song from 1963 called: “So much in love” by The Tymes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsGy-ndBhUc
I loved this song from the first time I heard it, which was this version by TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-TRYvuQz-g
This was from the 1982 “Fast times at Ridgemont high” soundtrack. Now searching YouTube, I came across these beauties:
The Go-Go’s “We got the beat”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD1BWcf8vhE&list=PLEYbIcQL9PREnL...
...which was the main reason I wanted to buy the soundtrack, but I realized too late that it wasn’t on... Anyway, another reason I wanted it was this one, Jackson Browne’s “Somebody’s baby”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-3TZiyY9Sk&list=PLMmgUXF15loonc...
I also discovered this one, Don Henley’s “Love rules”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGxsQtElB4M&list=PL0087129B21274C5F
But the one that knocked me over, especially after I got the soundtrack, was this one, “Goodbye goodbye” by Oingo Boingo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNmegAqtCaw
Whew! Lol That wasn’t exactly the version I have on my soundtrack, which I have both on LP and CD, (yes, I’m a geek) but it’s the closest I could find. I think, as dumb as they are, our period teen movies will always have a special place in our hearts. I may share more at a later time, I have one in store that's a bit of a lost gem that I found on cable, in the infancy of pay television so stay tuned! :D Well this was fun, thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi all, because it’s my “baby’s” birthday today, here’s Elvis Presley singing "Happy birthday baby":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HbkeZ3qEmc
:D And now, completely unrelated, just because I heard it on the radio this morning, “Bella Notte” from Disney’s “Lady and the tramp”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Er8wXuqdEY
lol Well, I didn’t hear this version, but they didn’t have the Bryn Terfel version on YouTube sadly, but I guess this one can count for father’s day, because it’s actually one of my husband’s favourites! :D Happy father’s day to all dads, g-pa’s, adopted dads and father figures out there! :D Thank you for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi everyone, do you agree that there’s something special about the feeling of Saturday night, even if it’s flashback Saturday nights? Maybe it’s just me... :D Anyway, I heard this great song on Galaxy Jukebox Oldies tonight. It’s Barbara Lewis “Hello Stranger”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-VDbbjIto4
There’s something very cool about the groove of that song. I think my problem with searching for a song, I always get lost in the suggestions on YouTube. XD I could not pass across this one and not post it because it’s too cool, it’s Mel Carter - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frCQfKTykzM
It’s just the kind of song that you play over and over again. Now here’s another song from the same homemade compilation I have, Gene Pitney “Town without pity”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vAyitZPcMo
I remember this song from the movie “Look who’s talking”, when Molly is trying to feed Mikey and he won’t eat, then James bursts in singing that song and starts dancing with her! Lol Haven’t watched that one in a while... Hmm, speaking of movies not watched in a while, from “Dirty Dancing”, The Ronettes “Be my baby” that gets the blood pumping as soon as it starts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzhbGaCwBzs
and while I’m at it, another one coming from the lucrative Phil Spector’s wall of sound period, The Crystals “Then he kissed me”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE_jOD2Fxvs
You probably won’t believe this, but the first version I ever heard of this song sounded very different. Here it is, Kiss “Then she kissed me”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htQ2tO3xMIU
OMG I love that version! Lol It’s off their “Love gun” album, man that brings back memories! I think it was 1977 and we were a bunch of friends hanging out, listening to Kiss, in a room full of Kiss and motorcycle posters... I wasn’t sure at first if I liked them, but when I heard “Christine 16”, oh yeah baby! lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEyjy0izbm8
I still have that 45 too... :D Paul was my favourite and I was thrilled when I found out he wrote with our Michael! Well anyway, that’s enough nostalgia for tonight. Thank you very much for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi all, this is something I meant to post about a week ago but couldn't find the time. I was in the car the other day and a Cee-Lo Green song came on the radio. I can't remember for the life of me what it was, but my husband, who hardly knows anything about today's pop music, asked me if that was Cee-Lo Green singing and sure enough, it was. My husband discovered Cee-Lo over the hollidays, because of Cee-Lo's video with the Muppets:
Cee-Lo Green & Muppets “All I need is love”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEgcLrgxUOw
I also found Cee-Lo and Kermit the Frog singing, appropriately enough, “Being green”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4Q3WGxvyZg
My favourite version of this song, aside from Jim Henson’s Kermit’s, is the Ray Charles version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NpNz9VGUws
Yeah baby, that’s the stuff! That’s off his album “Renaissance”... Ah, it makes me teary-eyed... Well back to Cee-Lo, for those unaware, he first came to public awareness with Gnarls Barkley and the song “Crazy”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzV9QExGFQs
I just love singing that song! That was off their “St Elsewhere” album. Now, here’s the song I wanted to share, thinking of Gnarls Barkley. It’s called “Blind Mary":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHerEOnajZg
The words of that song are wonderful: it’s all about admiring this girl Mary, who’s an independant girl and loves him unconditionally, not caring about his outward appearance, which is obviously the best. BTW, it’s off their album “The odd couple”. Enjoy! Thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi all, today, I want to share about miss “So unusual”, Cyndi Lauper. Of course, we all know her from her 80’s hits “Girls just wanna have fun”, “Time after time”, “True colors” etc, but I got a huge surprise concerning her today. I knew she had recorded an album of standards with songs like “At last”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahog_NFlQvA
I found out recently that she’d recorded a blues album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CAotXJByTg
But today, going through my Amazon recommendations, I found the soundtrack to the musical “Kinky boots”, which is a new musical I heard about. The Amazon page listed the title with Cyndi’s name under it, so I checked the samples, but not one had Cyndi’s voice. So I double-checked and it turns out she actually composed the music! Here’s a sample:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfn1qzXQx7k
Ain’t that a kick in the head? lol On further reading on Amazon, I found out this was based on a true story and it was a movie previously… Hmm, I’m hearing all kinds of connections like Michael mentioned that one of the musicals he’s working on was previously a movie and I know he and Cyndi are friends and gee, I wonder where he got the idea from… :D Strange coincidence… I really wonder what movie that is… BTW, Cyndi did have previous experience with musical theatre music. In 1991, she sang the cut "The world is stone" from the English version of the rock opera “Starmania” called “Tycoon”. The song she sang was called “The world is stone”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pTbtglGQ5Q
I have a soft spot in my heart for that song, but that’s for another blog… XD Anyway, I will leave you with another one of Cyndi’s cover songs, “What’s going on” from “True colors”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCsk5kO4J-g
That’s it for now, hope you enjoy, thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hi all, just heard this while switching radio stations this morning, Corneille “Ensemble”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOF_U-AiP9w
Now is that a nice, easy-going Sunday morning song or what? This is early Corneille, from his 2003 debut album “Parce qu’on vient de loin” (Because we come from far). Well, as long as I’m talking about early Corneille, here’s the song that introduced me to him. It’s called “Zoukin”, while he was with a group called O.N.E.:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zReqA-SNb_E
I’m not sure how old that is, I think it was 1999, but don’t take this to the bank. I wish I could find a decent on-line bio. Well anyway, I hadn’t planned on an extensive search this morning, but I found a new song from him! It was uploaded at the end of April and is called “Le paradis”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18JtAvSDpM0
I’m assuming it’s from his upcoming album. To be honest, it’s not my favorite, simply because it smothers his beautiful voice. Anyway, hope you enjoy and thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Enjoy and thanks for reading, sincerely, Sylvie <3
Hey party people! lol Just because it's Friday and this is a fun party song, "This is how we do it" by Montell Jordan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hiUuL5uTKc
This is one of those songs I can't sit still for and all I have time for tonight, but more later, I'm sure! Thanks for reading and party on! sincerely, Sylvie XD
