Industry Celebrates BMI President Del Bryant - 2014 Golden Mike Award Recipient

Posted in News on March 24, 2014

More than 200 television, radio and music industry executives gathered at the Plaza Hotel in New York City on Monday, February 24, 2014, to celebrate the illustrious career of Broadcast Music, Inc. President Del Bryant, who was awarded the 2014 Golden Mike Award by the Broadcasters Foundation of America for his lasting contributions to the music industry.

The evening was hosted by Bob Schieffer, host of CBS’ Face The Nation, with memorable live performances by singer-songwriter, musician and actor Kris Kristofferson and singer-songwriter Brenda Russell. Presenters for the evening were longtime personal and professional friends of Bryant: Michael Bolton, performer and BMI songwriter; Jack Sander, former Chairman of the BMI Board of Directors; and Sandra Lee, internationally acclaimed culinary and home style expert and host of four programs on the Food Network, the Cooking Channel and HGTV.

In addition to the performances, a very moving video tribute to Bryant provided a glimpse into his outstanding career with testimonials from some of music’s biggest names, including Dolly Parton, John Williams, Willie Nelson, and others. Bryant joins a legacy of Golden Mike honorees from the BMI family including the late Frances Preston, former BMI President and CEO (2004), and current BMI Board members Catherine Hughes of Radio One (2002) and Virginia Hubbard Morris of Hubbard Broadcasting and the Hubbard Family (1997).

I have found this article about Golden Mike Award (unfortunately, I could not put my text to the beginning):

Dallas turns purple for domestic violence awareness

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings attended an anti-domestic violence meeting this month in New York with actor Patrick Stewart and singer Michael Bolton.

Dallas is going purple for domestic violence awareness.

As the annual Crimes Against Women Conference kicks off downtown, businesses and buildings across town will “Paint the Town Purple” through Wednesday, splashing the skyline and streets with the color of domestic violence awareness.

At least three major buildings in the downtown skyline — the Omni Dallas Hotel, Reunion Tower and Bank of America Plaza — will turn their lights purple. The downtown Neiman Marcus store also plans to decorate its storefront accordingly, even decking out its mannequins in purple fashion.

The campaign, spearheaded by City Hall’s domestic violence task force, aims to draw attention to the crime as hundreds of law enforcement personnel and advocates from around the country come to Dallas to learn how to fight it.

“The community is showing that they’re not going to stand for what is often a silent crime — that they are going to stand up and support victims,” said Dallas City Council member Jennifer Staubach Gates, who heads the task force. “They’re not going to allow it to happen in our city.”

Gates planned for “Paint the Town Purple” to coincide with the Crimes Against Women Conference, held yearly in Dallas. The conference, which begins Monday and runs through Wednesday, addresses problems such as sexual assault and human trafficking in addition to domestic violence.

Though the conference is in its ninth year, the city’s support makes this a “groundbreaking year,” said Becky Park, national conference director.

“It’s a tipping point — for the city, for the conference,” she said. “It’s exciting. It’s such a groundswell of support, and I really feel the whole city is behind it.”

The campaign’s general request for purple has allowed each of the participants to get creative. Some businesses have told City Hall they will ask their employees to wear purple to work. One real estate company said it would place purple flowers in the lobby. The Nasher Sculpture Center plans to tie purple ribbons on its trees. At Neiman Marcus downtown, the window displays will be color coordinated — down to the lighting.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, who has made fighting domestic violence a priority during his tenure, also has plans of his own to help raise awareness this week. In addition to offering the conference’s welcome speech Monday, he will host a lunch Tuesday for mayors from across North Texas to discuss how domestic violence ravages their communities.

Park, the conference director, said, “What I’m hoping is that these mayors come to this, they hear more, they go to these workshops ... and they go back to their towns and start preaching the gospel that this is what we need to do.”

In addition to Rawlings, many other North Texas officials are expected to attend portions of the conference, including Dallas Police Chief David Brown, Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez, District Attorney Craig Watkins and U.S. Attorney Sara Saldaña.

Gates said she was encouraged that the downtown community — and the city overall — stepped up.

“Often, domestic violence is something that is behind closed doors,” she said. “We are not going to keep those doors closed. We’re going to say we support these victims and stop this crime.”
