On April 22, the Cleveland Parks and Recreation Department’s Old Timers Hall of Fame will induct the new members for 2016.

James “Mike” Bolen will be joining the previously announced honorees as Hall of Famers.

Announced inductees for 2016 are Johnny Borders, coach; John Varnell, football; Mike Johnson, baseball; Bob McIntire, golf; Joe Waddell, wrestling; and Ann Pugh-Armstrong, Fred Craigmiles, Karen Richter May, Gene Isom and David “Latt” Lattimore, all for basketball.

Inductees into the Old Timers Hall of Fame are individuals who have had a positive impact on local sports programs either as a coach or player.

The banquet will be held at 6 p.m. on April 22 at the Museum Center at Five Points. Tickets are available at City Parks and Recreation or by calling 479-4129.

Bolen said he began playing softball at age 13 at the Old Community Center under Ralph Rymer.

When Bolen’s grandfather, J.L. Parker, took over as coach, Bolen played for him at the Community Center, Cleveland Water System and Cleveland Merchants.

“In 1976, I joined Rockholts Furniture out of Decatur. This was my first really good power team,” Bolen said.

In 1977, Bolen and fellow Clevelanders Eddie Corum, Mike Fitzgerald and Jerry Ratcliff joined the Burnette & Associates team from Chattanooga.

“We had a really powerful team, winning several tournaments and achieving a high ranking nationally,” he said.

In 1979, Bolen split the year with Burnette and LE-AL Company. In the late 1970s, the team won several state championships.

In 1980, Bolen joined Dave Carroll Sports and then Dave Carroll Skoal Bandits. “Both were super teams,” he said.

“In 1980, we finished runner-up in the USSSA World Series. I won my first All World selection in 1980 and led the nation in batting average and home runs in 1981. Sherrills Ford, N.C., was the location of the team,” he said.

“In 1982, 1983 and 1984, I joined the Jerry’s Catering out of Miami, Fla. We won two ASA national titles and two USSSA World Series championships,” Bolen said.

Bolen said he played with Steele’s Sports out of Grafton, Ohio, in 1985, 1986 and 1987.

“We toured the country playing softball,” Bolen said. “We played in every state except Alaska, including Canada. I hit around 1,300 home runs and batted over 700 with Steele’s. We won three ASA national championships and one NSA title as well as two Smoky Mountain titles and runner-up USSSA. I was featured in our team article in Sports Illustrated in 1986.”

With Howard’s Furniture in 1988, Bolen’s team won the ISA world Series and finished runner-up in the USSSA World Series.

“I also played with Michael Bolton’s softball team, The Bolton Bombers, for several years. We played across the country doing charity games,” he noted.

“I always played locally while traveling with major teams,” Bolen said.

He said he played on nine World Champion teams — five ASA (three with Steele’s and two with Jerry’s); two USSSA with Jerry’s’ one NSA with Steele’s; and one ISA with Howard’s.

He also played on 12 All World teams — five ASA, four USSSA, one NSA and two Slow Pitch conference.

Here is an article about a former band member, Carol Jarvis.  Seems she has been fighting cancer but has come through.  This is an article about her fight and a picture of her, Michael and Seal each kissing her on the cheek.

Thanks for posting Gail and so, so glad to hear treatment was a success for Carol and long may she stay in remission.  Last heard about Carol was from a tweet she sent Michael in 2014 when he was coming over to do his tour and saying about meeting up for a pint.....hope they managed it and hope they do again.

Thanks again Gail !!! :)
