Hello to all ! What a blessing this new album is ! Though the album is not available in Europe yet, even in the biggest record store in Paris, they don't have it. Usually they do have American Imports on their US day of release, but this time they don't have it so I'm gonna buy the album through Amazon US. Anyway, I've had the opportunity to listen to it and what a treat !!!
From start to finish. I guess there are two tracks that really resonate with us, the 20-year fans of Michael : first one is Love Is Everything, the rascal flatts track. Though opening some new fields for Michael, towards Country Music Lovers, this track also brings us back to the vintage MB vocals, those of the 1987-1991 golden era. This track could have belonged to Soul Provider and I mean that as a BIG compliment. The other track that is reminiscent of Michael's golden era is "Im Not Ready"... Those who loved "From Now On" or "We're Not Making LOve Anymore" will see what I mean... Except that to mean, this duet is the best Michael has ever recorded... The vocals are beyond amazing. Would we be in 1990 this would have been number one all over the world....
What I like with this album is that MB is back to AC territory with productions by David Foster (long overdue since 1993 the arms of Love, thats a 18 years wait !!!!!), Dan Huff, Rudy Perez.... The vocals are great : MB is back to his great vocals, not trying to sound hip, or restrained , or whatever, just being himself...
But the masterpiece of this CD is the Eva Cassidy duet which ranks up there with the best of Michael... It's amazing and I'm sure it's gonna introduce Eva to a whole new bunch of people... anyway, this CD deserves the best.. It really is CLASSIC Bolton and it's nice to see that, 14 years after MB last major hit, people seem to realize that they don't make them like him anymore
I do wish that it's only the beginningof MB revival all over the world and am more than proud to have been a MB fan, through thik and thi, for the last 20 years. God bless you, Mister Bolotin !
Bonjour Matthieu, it’s been a good while since you’ve posted, welcome back! Have you checked Amazon.fr? Gail, the moderator of this forum had given us the link to order from there. By the way, I guess you haven’t seen the ad to pre-order a signed copy of the album and T-shirt bundle? As far as I know, you can buy it directly from this site. I’m glad you feel as if this is a return to the “golden era” as you call it. Have you seen Michael’s live performances of “I’m not ready” from DWTS and the “Kathy Lee & Hoda” show? They’re pretty impressive! Michael had been touring even more extensively than usual last year and according to fans’ reports, it sounded like Michael was training for the vocal Olympics! He has said himself in an interview last fall that he was looking in the direction of musical theater, having been invited to take part in both “Chicago” and “Phantom of the opera” (although we have no time-frame on that) and my guess is that he certainly is building up the physical and vocal stamina for it. We were all very happy to hear about the David Foster collaboration because their partnership seems to have the Midas touch. If you go back a few posts, you can read a couple of fabulous articles Gail posted about Michael’s feelings on the making of the album and specific duets and they’re a joy to read! Matthieu, if you check out the “Working on new CD” thread:
http://michaelbolton.ning.com/forum/topics/working-on-new-cd-2011
you’ll see that the discussion on Eva has already started. I had personally only heard the name, but since most of us weren’t familiar with her genre, this gem, pardon the pun, passed us by. Funny that you mention that “they don’t make them like him any more” because those were Chris Botti’s exact words in the YouTube vignette about “You are so beautiful”, in case you haven’t seen it. I think the “Jack Sparrow” video came just in time to bring attention to Michael before he released this album so the rest of the world could discover what we’ve all known all along, that he’s the best! Thank you for sharing your enthusiastic and in-depth review Matthieu, take care. Hugs, sincerely, Sylvie from Canada
Thanks very much indeed Matthieu for that review of Gems - haven't heard the whole of it yet, my copy is still to arrive - but all the snippets and videos from various shows where Michael has performed some of the songs have made it something well worth waiting for and I am so glad to hear you love Eva Cassidy for when I heard Michael was recording with her I was on Cloud 9 right away and as I keep on saying that is going to be the first song I play !! :)
Thanks again for coming in and giving us your take on the album !! :)
Sylvia. Your wee Scottish friend.
