Here is another article "Bolton sings over rainbows:

http://www.thenewage.co.za/25173-1022-53-Bolton_sings_over_rainbows

Zwelakhe Shangase

Popular multiple Grammy award-winning singer Michael Bolton is excited about meeting local Afro-jazz sensation Judith Sephuma when they perform their rendition of “Over The Rainbow” at Carnival City for the first time.

Bolton was speaking at a press briefing held at the classy Westcliff Hotel in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon, where he is staying for the duration of his local tour.

The 58-year-old former hard rock singer has experimented in various genres like classical, soft ballads and fusion.

He said gravitating towards rock was a deadly mistake as he simply did not sell any records.

Bolton said he no longer believed that magic would only happen if two artists were together in the studio.

“It’s now a general thing to have people in different continents recording songs apart.

“When you get to hear another artist’s interpretation of the song and the manner in which they play it, it might not be something that you expect but something that you will like.”

He said their rendition of “Over the Rainbow” was rhythmic but still had a melodic vibe to it.

“The song is going to outlive all of us because of its power.

“Our rendition, different as it is, doesn’t deny the original message and meaning of the song.”

He also said this was certainly not the last duet album he would release and “there have been many artists from Indonesia, Australia and even Russia who have expressed interest in collaborating with me”.

“It’s amazing because most of the people I’ve collaborated with are in their mid- to late-20s which means they were listening to my songs when they were just kids.”

The singer, best known for his soft rock ballads and tenor or countertenor vocals, has just concluded a 115-city world tour spanning several continents. He is delighted that his visit coincides with national Women’s Day in SA, “Events like these inspire me because having women standing up for their rights is a life-altering experience.”

He recently released his duet collections album, Gems, which features 12 other artists from across the globe.

Bolton remains involved in humanitarian causes through the Michael Bolton Charities, which has raised more than $3.7m (about R26m) in

the US by assisting women and children at risk from the effects of poverty, emotional, physical and sexual abuse.

He said that when he moved back to pop music, was when success happened and many doors opened for him.

“A new respect from within me was born and my passion for music became stronger.

“Vocal chords are just two muscles, but what you demand from them deepens your passion for the craft.”

He said he capitalised on the wave success to meet up with politicians, people who set agendas and people who effected change in the world.

“With passion you get to do more with your life.”

A prolific songwriter, he has worked with people like Ray Charles, Luciano Pavarotti, Stevie Wonder and popular rapper Kanye West. He said he didn’t have a specific genre that he could identify with and preferred not to label his music.

He said audiences who would be attended his concerts would be treated to a surprise performance but didn’t want to divulge more.

When he was told that tickets were almost sold out for his two day concert, he quipped: “Well, I’d better show up then!”
