Michael Bolton's latest hit of the YouTube variety
Michael Bolton is one of the most successful musical acts of all time, having sold 53 million albums and singles worldwide in his career, but he saw his career launch into a new stratosphere last year thanks to Saturday Night Live, YouTube, and “A big, sexy hook.”
Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, also known as the music group “Lonely Island,” worked with Bolton on a SNL Digital Short called “Jack Sparrow” and it debuted in May on the show.
In the song, Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone want to incorporate Bolton into a hip-hop song about meeting women. Bolton wrote the chorus, but it is about movie characters and ruins the trio's song.
In the video clip, Bolton boldly dressed up as Jack Sparrow, the lead character in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise staring Johnny Depp, as well as “Forrest Gump,” “Scarface,” and even dressed in drag to portray “Erin Brockovich.”
The video became an internet sensation, and the YouTube clip has generated more than 66 million views and counting.
“It just shows the new world we're in and the power of viral,” said Bolton, who was playing golf this week as part of the celebrity field at the Humana Challenge. “Those guys were such a pleasure to work with and so savvy. Between the three of them, it's going to be fun and brilliant, and sick.”
But Bolton said the trio had been in touch for eight months beforehand to work with each other. Bolton knew the kind of reaction the SNL Digital Shorts have gotten, and admired their work with other artists such as Justin Timberlake, Akon and T-Pain.
“I told them, ‘I love you guys and I would love to do something with you. You're hilarious, but I can't do some of the things you've written. Your audience is going to love it, but my audience is going to go, what?'” Bolton said. “So they kept working on it. I figured they were all too busy, but Andy Samberg had it in his head to do this.”
Samberg was persistent, and kept making changes trying to find something that would work. Although Bolton rejected several scripts, he said he found them all amusing.
“He kept sending back changes and tweaks to the script,” Bolton said. “One was, what's the word, they were more crude, or nasty or crass than the other. Funny though. I wanted to do them. I would laugh, I belly laughed. This would be hilarious, but I'm telling you, some of my audience wouldn't get it. They would be offended. They wouldn't get your brand of humor with the shock value.”
Finally, it took eight months, and Bolton got a script while he was doing a performance in Atlanta. Bolton liked the concept of being a “major cinephile.”
So Bolton found a studio and worked with the trio, who were communicating through Skype. During the process, Bolton was impressed with their attention to details.
When Bolton made his way to New York, they began to film the video. To Bolton's surprise, there were cranes brought in for the shoot at Brighton Beach in Brooklyn.
“They were shooting a film. They were taking this seriously,” Bolton said. “I've done some expensive videos, but they were shooting a film.”
As soon as the SNL staff saw footage of Bolton as Tony Montana from “Scarface” and a mountain of cocaine, they said the short would be on that week's show, which meant they had to put a rush on shooting the video. Bolton said it took two 17-hour days to complete the video short.
In the video, Bolton is dressed as the pirate Jack Sparrow, Forrest Gump, Montana and in drag for Erin Brockovich.
When the video was to debut on SNL, Bolton was in the audience.
“I sat in back and watched to see people's reaction,” Bolton said. “I was a nervous wreck. It better go over because I'm Erin Brockovich for 30 seconds of the most traumatic experience of my life looking at the mirror. I'll need therapy so this better be worth it.”
The video got a strong reaction. During the after party, Bolton was hanging out with musician John Mayer.
“He said, ‘Tomorrow dude, you're going to see an audience you've never seen. They will discover you on YouTube when it goes viral,'” Bolton said.
The next day, Bolton said his daughter who handles his online properties, was in the kitchen when she started to see the kind of reaction her father was getting.
“She was sitting there going, ‘You're not going to believe this stuff dad. These are 14-to-40 year old guys talking about this.' Justin Bieber put this up on his Twitter site, ‘Bolton is a beast, you have to check this out.' That's OK, I'm on Bieber's radar.”
“A lot of my hits have been on YouTube. But even the ones that are big, none of them have been near 67 million,” Bolton said. “This is going to do 100 million views.”
