Hi all, I thought I’d share something different today: a bit of mindless trivia, hope you enjoy it. Take care and hugs to all, sincerely, Sylvie from Canada

------------------

Q: Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have

buttons on the left?

A: When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily

by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push

buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were

dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And

that's where women's buttons have remained since.

Q: Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?

A: This comes from the French word m'aidez -meaning 'help me' -- and is

pronounced, approximately, 'mayday.'

Q: Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?

A: In France , where tennis became popular, round zero on the scoreboard

looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'egg.' When

tennis was introduced in the US , Americans (mis)pronounced it 'love.'

Q. Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?

A: In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write,

documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to

fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually

became synonymous.

Q: Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?

A: In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from

player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not

wish to assume the responsibility of dealing,he would 'pass the buck' to the

next player.

Q: Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?

A: It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him

a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became

customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of

the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his

host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.

Q: Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?

A:Invented in 1825,limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning

a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light.. In the theatre,a

performer 'in the limelight' was the centre of attention.

Q: Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?

A: Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with

nine being the highest cloud If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that

person is floating well above worldly cares.

Q: In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?

A. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl,Louis, King of

France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf.' So he had the first

course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was

properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from

a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when returned

to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice

with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots

changed it into 'caddie.

Q: Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?

A: Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay

called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars

became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word,

he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.

Q: Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notches

(milling), while pennies and nickels do not?

A: The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold

and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the

precious metals. Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they

used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren't notched because the

metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave.

So there! Now you know!

The "W" in Christmas

Each December I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience.

I had cut back on nonessential obligations - extensive card writing,

endless baking, decorating, and overspending.

Yet still, I found myself exhausted - unable to appreciate the

precious family moments - and of course, the true meaning of

Christmas.

My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting

season for a six year old.

For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant."

I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the

production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his

teacher. She assured me there'd be a dress rehearsal the morning of the

presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then.

Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise.

On the morning of the dress rehearsal I filed in ten minutes

early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room I saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats.

As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song.

Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the

holiday as "Christmas", I didn't expect anything other than fun songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer.

So when my son's class rose to sing "Christmas Love", I was slightly taken aback by its bold title.

Nicholas was aglow - as were all of his classmates - adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters, and bright snowcaps on their heads.

Those in the front row - center stage - held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the song.

As the class would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the

letter C. Then, "H is for Happy," and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas Love."

The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her; a

small, quiet, girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside down - totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W".

The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W".

Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together.

A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen.

In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in the chaos there was a purpose for our festivities.

For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:

"C H R I S T W A S L O V E"

HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS SEASON!

A beautiful story Sylvie and thanks for sharing on here and don't you dare apologise for being "incorrect" in any manner for as far as I am concerned that statement - PC - that abounds nowadays can get stuck where the sun don't shine....and THAT is a statement !!!   Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birth and if you change it to anything else you have no right whatsoever to hold the day as a celebration or commerate it in any way.......soap box has been dug up again !!!!!!! LOL.

Hi  everyone, I've heard about this story on the radio yesterday and had to share. It's one of the most heartwarming stories I've ever heard. It's the story of an 8 year old boy wanting to connect with his younger brother who has cerebral palsy.  hope you enjoy it. Take care and hugs to all, sincerely,  Sylvie from Canada

Hi Folks,

Thought and hope some of you may be interested in seeing and hearing this video and it is of a young couple, Jonathan and Charlotte, 17 and 16 respectively, taking part in a show we have here in the UK called Britain's Got Talent the same show that Susan Boyle was discovered on and all I will say is, as an introduction,  a Jonathan and Michael duet .......I can hear it  !!!!! :)     For Sylvie and Robin CA Jonathan is probably about two/three times larger than he should be but what a cheeky, cute face for all of it but at the end, he is literally shaking, even just as he is getting to the end of the song his hand is shaking holding the mic....how he didn't burst into tears I don't know but wouldn't be surprised if he did afterward......there were plenty of tears in the audiences eyes and in mine too !!!! :)    Enjoy !!!!!! :)

Hi all, just a little food for thought today. Sorry it’s all in caps, but I copied it from a forward and thought it would be nice to share. Take care and hugs to all, sincerely, Sylvie from Canada

TWO FRIENDS WERE WALKING  THROUGH THE DESERT .  DURING SOME POINT OF THE  JOURNEY, THEY HAD AN  ARGUMENT; AND ONE FRIEND  SLAPPED THE OTHER ONE

IN THE FACE.   THE ONE WHO GOT SLAPPED  WAS HURT, BUT WITHOUT  SAYING ANYTHING,

WROTE IN THE SAND ,  TODAY MY BEST FRIEND  SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE .  THEY KEPT ON WALKING,  UNTIL THEY FOUND AN OASIS,  WHERE THEY DECIDED  TO TAKE A BATH.

THE ONE WHO HAD BEEN   SLAPPED GOT STUCK IN THE MIRE AND STARTED DROWNING,  BUT THE FRIEND SAVED HIM.  AFTER HE RECOVERED FROM  THE NEAR DROWNING,  HE WROTE  ON A STONE:

'TODAY MY BEST FRIEND  SAVED MY LIFE'  THE FRIEND WHO HAD SLAPPED

AND SAVED HIS BEST FRIEND  ASKED HIM, 'AFTER I HURT YOU,

YOU WROTE IN THE SAND AND NOW,  YOU WRITE ON A STONE, WHY?'  THE FRIEND REPLIED

'WHEN SOMEONE HURTS US  WE SHOULD WRITE IT DOWN  IN SAND, WHERE WINDS OF  FORGIVENESS CAN ERASE IT AWAY.  BUT, WHEN SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING GOOD FOR US,  WE MUST ENGRAVE IT IN STONE  WHERE NO WIND  CAN EVER ERASE IT'

LEARN TO WRITE  YOUR HURTS IN  THE SAND AND TO  CARVE YOUR  BENEFITS IN STONE.

T HEY SAY IT TAKES A  MINUTE TO FIND A SPECIAL  PERSON,  AN HOUR TO  APPRECIATE THEM, A DAY

TO LOVE THEM,  BUT THEN ,  AN ENTIRE LIFE  TO FORGET THEM.

Thanks for that beautiful little message Sylvie......one everyone should take heed of !!! :)    Thanks for sharing !!! :)
