Thanks Gail, and Robin on my end ads were popping up and the screen had that grey cast but I was able to squint :( to read it. Very nice interview!! Hugs,

Kathy T. :)

Hi Gail, I think I'll need a little help with that one because I can't find the Q&A anywhere: I only got the bit of text. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks for posting the link, take care. Hugs, sincerely, Sylvie Qc Canada

Here is the article with quetions and answers for those who couldn't access easily and hope it falls in correct place.........

As the summer of 1983 came to a close, a long-struggling singer-songwriter was having his first chart success with a song he composed for Laura Branigan. "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" was a No. 1 adult contemporary hit, reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, and served as the springboard for 30 years of success for Michael Bolton.

Bolton’s career has featured more than two dozen hits (nine were No. 1 adult contemporary records, including his own version of "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You") and seven platinum albums. He has also written hits for Cher, Barbra Streisand and KISS. In 2011, Bolton became a video sensation when he starred as "Captain Jack Sparrow" in a collaboration with "Saturday Night Live" comedy trio The Lonely Island. The video has been viewed nearly 112 million times on YouTube.

Bolton, who will perform Sunday at Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols, has had a busy 2013. He released his memoir, "The Soul of It All: My Music, My Life," in January, and unveiled a Motown covers album, "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough: A Tribute to Hitsville USA," in February. He also sings on a track from rapper Kid Cudi’s latest album, "Indicud."

Question: Before we get to the new album and memoir, let’s talk about your live show. What can fans expect at the Tioga Downs concert? You’ve got quite a catalog of songs to choose from!

Answer:

Expect most of the greatest hits I’ve written like "How Can We Be Lovers," "Soul Provider," "Said I Loved You," "Time Love & Tenderness," "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," and some of the greatest hits that I’ve fallen in love with and recorded in honor of my musical heroes, and which have been so important to my own career like "Georgia on My Mind," "Dock of the Bay" and "When A Man Loves A Woman."

Q: Are you certain songs or hits that you never tire of singing? Are there any non-hits or album tracks that enjoy singing live and placing in the set list?

A:

What attracts me to a song and performing it is a combination of the concept and message it communicates, and the melody and melodic range expressing a certain idea and emotion. Once I find a song that fits, I never tire of singing it. It could be something fun and rockin’ like "Sweet Home Chicago" that really let’s the whole band shine or something more intimate like "Nessun Dorma" which allows me to pay homage to the greatest tenor — Lucianno Pavarotti.

Q: Hits such as "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," "How Can We Be Lovers," "Steel Bars and "Soul Provider" have a timeless quality to them. They don’t sound their age. Instead, they sound like they could’ve been recorded this year. Why? Is it the quality of the songs, the production, or the fact that your voice remains as strong and recognizable as ever?

A:

That’s the best compliment. I can only hope that my songs outlive me — as the greatest art outlives its author — and I plan on being around a long time! I always pour everything I have into singing a song but the material has to be great for it to truly connect with an audience and I’ve worked with the greatest composers around — multi-Grammy-winning songwriters and producers like David Foster, Diane Warren, Mutt Lange, Walter Afanasieff, Rudy Perez (and) Desmond Child, and they all contributed to making these songs timeless.

Q: Your new "Tribute to Hitsville" album is terrific. It’s even more interesting because you were covering Motown songs long before cover albums became popular. Your first albums for RCA (in 1975) and Columbia (in 1983) both featured Motown covers. Why now for this album and what is it about these songs that are special to you?

A:

Not many people know my history as a singer and songwriter — that before I did pop, I was doing rock and that even before that I was doing R&B. As a kid I was greatly influenced by rhythm & blues not only musically, but socially. More recently, I’ve become focused on Detroit and Hitsville specifically, where so much of that music was created. I love these timeless songs and iconic artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and so many more. While there may never be another moment of musical greatness quite like that, I do want to remind people of the spirit behind this music, and faith in the American Dream.

Q: The original song on the album (the should-be-hit "Gotta Keep Dreamin") fits right in between "Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "Nowhere to Run." How did that song come together? Was it written specifically for the project?

A:

It’s great to hear that you connect with "Gotta Keep Dreamin," which I wrote and produced with the very talented Dave Tozer, Andrea Martin and Ron Pope. That song was written as an anthem for Detroit, where Hitsville is located. Before recording this album, I took several trips to Detroit to immerse myself in the catalog of music from Hitsville and to meet with many of the original writers, producers and artists. As much as I was so inspired by the musical legacy that still thrives there, I was also struck by the devastation that’s hit Detroit over the past decade. But there are people there that are very committed to bringing it back, and "Dreamin" is also about rekindling hope.

Q: You duet with two great, young singers on the album — Kelly Rowland and Melanie Fiona — and have sang with legends ranging from Pavarotti to Ray Charles to Patti Labelle. Is there someone out there on your duet wish list who you have never sang with?

A:

I’d love to record and perform a duet with Rihanna, Adele or Kelly Clarkson. They are a few of my favorite contemporary artists.

Q: I would suspect that casual fans who read your memoir will be surprised to learn that you had six failed record deals before the age of 30. Your story is truly one of perseverance and never giving up on a dream. How important was it to take those lessons and present them in an inspirational way that all readers can relate to?

A:

My hope and intention in writing the memoir was exactly that, to make it relatable. There have been so many amazing things that have happened in my life, and many of them before any success hit. People or signs supported and encouraged me to keep following the dream. That is a message I hope to leave with readers, after learning about my journey, to believe in themselves and their dreams and to never give up.

Q: How did the collaboration with Kid Cudi on "Afterwards" come together? Is this another example of "Captain Jack Sparrow" bringing you to a new generation of artists and fans?

A:

Apparently Kid Cudi was a fan of the "Jack Sparrow" video and actually talked to Andy Samberg about what it was like to work with me. (Lonely Island members) Andy, Akiva, Jorma and I all had such a great time together, always in stitches laughing and pushing the creative boundaries, and we are planning on doing much more. So Cudi reached out to me and invited me onto his record, at the tail end of recording. We spent the first several hours in the studio just talking and getting to know each other and he is such a great person and dedicated artist. We really connected and are talking about collaborating again.

Q: As someone hip to new music and artists (after all, you wrote with Lady Gaga before she became THE Lady Gaga), are there new songs and acts that have caught your attention recently?

A:

I’m really lucky because as I tour the globe, from China to Germany to Brazil to South Africa and everywhere in between, I get to meet these gems in each country that the rest of the world may not know yet but who have huge voices and are great artists. I always get excited to discover a new artist and hopefully find ways of recording and performing together.

Q: Let’s say the book-publishing company wants to update your memoir 10 to 15 years from now. What do you hope will go in the as-yet-unwritten last chapter? What is there left for Michael Bolton to accomplish?

A:

There’s so much. As I’ve said, I’m just teeing off on the back nine. I’m in development with some very talented writers and producers on a few TV shows, both scripted (comedy) and non-scripted. I’m developing a book for Broadway while also considering a few existing roles I’d love to play. I’m expanding my charity to take an international dimension of protecting women and children at risk. I’m looking to tour with a few friends and also thinking about the concept for my next album.

Hello all you Bolton Fans!!! Here is my review for concert #4 on my So Cal MB tour :) Enjoy!

                                                                                   Cache Creek Casino

                                                                                        Brooks, Ca.

                                                                                      Aug. 25, 2013

Indulge me for a minute here as a confess my sins of preference for where to enjoy a Michael Bolton concert. I have now experienced Michael Bolton with a symphony orchestra crowd....a concert hall crowd...and a casino crowd in the last 3 concerts. Just like a buffet...lol..little bit of this and a little bit of that :) Which crowd really knows how to rock it with Michael and his band??? You fans know the answer and that is the concert hall crowd. No offense to symphony or casino folks.....BUT...fans who buy tix to see Michael sing at a concert venue....well... they come to PARTY and GET DOWN!! They are a Bolton Crowd through and through and they were ALL present at the Anaheim concert!! Whoa baby...we all rocked. The symphony crowd were cool and suave and enjoyed Michael's singing and the casino crowd was present and enjoyed Michael's singing but the concert hall crowd BEGGED for more Michael all night long!!! Symphony crowd....no stage dancing...casino crowd....no stage dancing....concert hall crowd....CAN'T wait to get to the stage and ROCK OUT and we did!!! Get my point??? As we say...jmo...lol Rest assured I ROCK OUT no matter where I see Michael perform it is just that sometimes the crowd doesn't rock with me :/ LOL Thank goodness I am a skilled chair dancer!! I have now confessed my sins and it is time to ROCK OUT my review!

I am still flying high on Anaheim concert fumes when we meet Tom and Ashley at Cache Creek Casino :) Hugs and kisses are given out and received and Miss Ashley looks divine with her new hair do topped off with sparkly hair spray that catches the light. Beautiful young lady!! It is blazing hot in this neck of the woods so we hurry into the casino. We see Milo and chat a bit and he helps Tom with a book for another fan. Thank you Milo!! You are sooooo sweet with such a crazy schedule but you always make fans feel special :))) I have to make a mad dash to the ticket box because I have FORGOTTEN my tix!!! I know...I know...but who amongst us hasn't done worse????? LOL Got my new tix and we stroll about the casino deciding which machine will take our money first. In doing so we come upon the posters showing where the MB concert will be held tonight and where to line up and no sooner do we arrive when we here some familiar tunes coming from behind a curtain!! A curtain no less...can you imagine??? Not a block wall...no closed LOCKED doors...nothing but a silly curtain!!! For heaven's sake!!! Omg....we all look at each other and before we seal the deal with a nod...I have disappeared behind the curtain!!!! What a delight to see the MB band playing and the beautiful Kelly rehearsing!! My eyes meet all the other eyes in the room and we all smile at each other. Most importantly....I see no menacing security mobsters :))))) I quickly calculate....ok...friendly crowd behind the curtain but I must move fast. It surely won't stay this way for long!!! (experience ;) I exit from behind the curtain to gather my gang of thieves in the night fans...Ashley, Tom and Bob...tell them coast is clear but we must move like Robin Hood in the Dark Forest...creeping creeping behind the curtain as Tom wheels Ashley in behind me and Bob follows them as we savor our moment of delight watching the best band rehearse as Kelly sings. Don't ask what song...I don't remember! lol  We get Kelly's attention by quietly gesturing like we had our arms cut off at the elbows...LOL  Brian sees us also and waves with a slightly confused look on his face. We assure him with head nods that all is ok....so far. We agree that our Forest moment is up and we politely wave goodbye to the flustered crowd behind the curtain. Just as we exit the reinforced barricaded curtain.....a very FAMILIAR voice starts to sing!! Oh my!!!! I stop dead in my tracks! I remind myself to breathe!!! Once again no words need to be spoken between this tight band of thieves and so I whirl right around again and go behind the curtain...my heart pounding.... when I come face to face with a 4'9" 90 lb security guard who looked like a 5 year old on his first day of school...lol He had a wide friendly smile that made me again stop in my tracks!! I thought momentarily....why I can mow this man right down and.....but he was so gentle....I relented....and I am surely going to heaven now!!! Well.....maybe...lol I said to him sweetly why of course I can't go behind the curtain...silly me...what was I thinking????  Have a good day sir :)))))) LOL.....we laughed and knew we had a great little MB adventure right there!! Little did we know it was only beginning. Bob disappears to make his annual deposit to the one armed bandits and Tom leaves for a bit to check on some arriving friends so Ashley and I still linger near THE curtain and take delight in what we just experienced. We didn't want to leave because we were enjoying the VOICE from behind the curtain. When....all...of...a...sudden....I hear a different yet familiar melody coming from behind the now "iron" curtain??? OMG....and then the lyrics start....this is a tale...OMG OMG OMG!!! I startle Ashley...do you hear that???? Her eyes get big as saucers.Do you hear Michael singing Jack Sparrow??? She nods yes vigorously and starts screaming!!! We laugh hysterically!! OMG....rehearsal songs mean only ONE thing!! THEY WILL be sung at the concert!!! Oh boy...now Ashley and I are dancing on the casino floor!!! Eyes are gazing upon us. What are you all looking at??? Don't you gamblers get it??? MB is going to SING JACK SPARROW!!!! For heaven's sake get with the groove people!! Puhleeeze!!! We finally calm down and I have to SIT down before I pass out...lol This is too much FUN!!! We all meet back up at the buffet and attempt to eat something before the concert. I have to collect myself because the Jack Sparrow moment is coming!! OMG!!! BREATHE!!! At least Tom hasn't blown up his heart monitor...yet ;)

It is concert time and Tom gets Ashley all settled in their front row center seats!!! Score!! Bob and I find our second row seats right in front of the infamous stool for the singing of Georgia :) We are all very happy fans and very excited for the show to begin!! A little info on seats...if I may....lol  Why is it that empty front row seats exist at casino concerts??? We all know the answer :/  I couldn't bear to see empty seats in the front row next to Ashley go unused and sit there cold and lonely while MB was singing. What's a serious fan to do??? So I patiently waited for the first break that Michael takes in the show and I made sure I warmed that seat up for the rest of MB's concert....lol Let me try to remember some of the songs because this time my memory is really gone due to a certain SONG!!!! Something about Tortuga?? ...LOL Here goes....WAMLAW, SILYBIL, either Georgia or DOTB or both...lol, ND, SHC, YDKM duets with Kelly: Prayer, HAISTLWY, ANMHE. I am sure there are more....BUT...THE SONG to be sung and HEARD was Jack Sparrow!!!!! OMG....I will NEVER forget that moment!!!! The Jack Sparrow song ranks right up there with the time Michael sang a duet with Smokey Robinson in Vegas!!!! Just when I think Mr. Michael Bolton can't possibly get any better....and then BAM...along comes Jack Sparrow!!! THANK YOU MICHAEL BOLTON!!!!! Who cares what happened during the rest of the concert!!! Really???.....I mean MB sang Jack Sparrow!!!!  I drifted away....I saw a pirate....a handsome pirate ;)....bandana on head...charcoal around his eyes...an earring...oh wait....I am in a dang casino at a GREAT MB concert!!!  I could barely get my phone camera onto record a video as I JUMPED OUT OF MY SEAT!! I knew this moment was coming but like all good moments....ain't nothing like THE moment!! Michael I am soooooo glad you finally got tired of me yelling out Jack Sparrow at any given moment at your concerts or on the golf course ;)  But of course....if little blue birds fly....then WHY can't....??? ;) Someday at one of my future concerts I will have another special moment!! You are the BEST!! Michael had fun describing the video to some in the crowd...you know....the ones that live under a rock....let me remind you....casino crowd! You all will get a good laugh at my commentary while I filmed MB as JS :) And YES Michael...we will get the JS vid up to 150 million!! Should have vid up by tomorrow night. No stage dancing but that didn't stop Ashely, Tom and myself. We were right up there after WAMLAW. Finally by the last song there were more people at the stage. Michael's voice was great as was Kelly's :) Frankly....I don't remember too much after Jack Sparrow and Michael sang it at about the 5th song? TOO MUCH FUN!!! We all chatted with the band afterward and Drew gave Ashley 2 drumsticks after the concert :))) And Michael gave Tom a guitar pic for Ashley during the concert:)))) We waited around a bit for Michael but he was busy with the casino crowd. Another day...another time.....always another concert!!! We all still had the MBC event to go to in a couple of days :)) The Thieves in the Night Gang said our goodnights and goodbyes and off to Reno we all went. I wonder what adventure awaits us in Reno???? lol To be continued.......

Kathy and LAFD Bob

Hey Kathy thanks for the review. I'm sure hearing and seeing some of sound check was a blast!!LOL And to hear Jack Sparrow, I would have been so surprised and excited too...So glad you all had a great time!!!! I am sure the audience went wild over Jack Sparrow.....

Wonderful time had by all, that's terrific.. I am so glad Ashley/Tom got to hear it all with you before-hand too.  The pics of her were adorable you posted over on Twitter...

Thanks for sharing a very surprising night for you all out there!!!LOL

Robin in MD:)

FANTASTIC REVIEW KATHY R., I could see you all behind that curtain with the band, the mind can be a spectacular place put to someone's words and you had me right there with you all.....LOL.....glad you were nice to the "little" security guard,.....LOL.....sounds like he thought your spying was cute anyway!!!
As for Ms. Ashley, sounds like she stole the night, her hair was no doubt beautiful and sweet of Drew to give her the drumsticks and MB the guitar pick. I can imagine both your reactions when MB sang JS. Some great detective work there, girl, getting a highlight before the concert moment......what fun that had to be :))))), good job!!!! Glad you got a front row seat afterall and you and Ashley got to do that stage dancing together. Thanks, Kathy, I just went to an MB concert for a bit here, GREAT REVIEW!!! Look very forward to pics and videos and Reno review too...... HUGS,

Kathy T. :)

Hey Kathy R, thanks ever so much for your entertaining review and editorial! :D  When you mentioned the poster, I thought: uh-oh, another one bites the dust! Lol Oh Kathy, it must have been so much fun to sneak in the rehearsal! In ’02, Robin R and I went into one blindly, lol though Michael wasn’t there in the gala hall at the time, but was fun none the less... :D Nice description of your encounter with the security guard! Lmao I think I would have screamed or at least squealed at hearing “Jack Sparrow” too! Lol Well Kathy, I can’t wait to hear your videos and of course, JS most of all. Thanks again girl for your ever enthusiastic review, take care. Hugs, sincerely, Sylvie Qc Canada

Hey Kathy,

Jack Sparrow to the rescue:)! YEAH:)! I have never went to a concert @ the casino, but I can only imagine:)! You All had a Blast, and that's All that Matters to me:)! Especially Ashley...but no Kisses...OMG...that's not like Michael, no more of that Michael...Ashley gets a Kiss no matter what from now on...even an air kiss will do, right Ashley?
