Spam

I know you have all noticed the spammers lately. I've been suspending as fast as I can but they come back under another name.  I have found the site they are sending us to and have reported them and asked for it to stop.  Hopefully they will comply...if not all I can do is keep suspending.  Sorry for any inconvenience.  Gail

Thanks Gail, I had  reported it to the web people, with the form you gave me the link to. It seems to be a pharmaceutical company and lately, they use one name ID's. The most annoying thing is that, as you know, we get both a message from the spammer and one from the  "Michael Bolton added...". I hope the web people can do something more permanent so you don't have to keep doing this, poor kid! Hi Gail,

It really is a shame there are so many idiots out there creating problems for everybody else!

Can I just say I am member's of other forums and some of them you have to have your first 15 or sometimes 30 post approved before they let you just post and they don't have any worries with this sort of thing at all.

When I see them in my inbox i just find them annoying but not so much for me but for you it has to be a real pain wasting your time on these clowns

Hopefully they will stop for you.

When we joined the site we had to complete and verify our e-mail addresses didnt we, but we didnt have to complete a 'Captcha' which if Ning install a Captcha feature this should help greatly at reducing the script written spam posts. (A Captcha is a code of letters and numbers that is usually hidden in amongst a patterned block.)

 

Sadly, however, it wont stop those members who are paid to infiltrate blogs and forums by adding themselves as members, but it will make it easier to detect, delete and ban them once they have identified themselves with a post.

 

I find it incredibly hard to comprehend that these companies believe that any one of us will actually visit their site and make a purchase of Viagra or prednisilone and would be quite interested to see the 'hit' figure sales from spam postings such as on this site?

 

Lets hope Ning can do something to stop these annoying posts.

I've checked our controls and the captcha is turned on..so new members have to fill that in...that's been on the whole time. I've just turned on the verify the email address as well so maybe the two together will be too much for them to keep doing.  So far nothing today so maybe between the contacts we have done and changing the verification it will stop completely...crossing fingers.

Sylvie, regarding Captchas, I didnt realise that Jaws readers cant read them. There is usually a 'disabled wheelchair' image with a small speaker by the captcha, and I often wondered if it was possible for the code to be read out for the user to listen to and sign in that way? Does this make sense to you or doesnt this work this way? I just sort of presumed this is how it worked?
