A Hero Who Touches the Heart & Soul

Gallo Center for the Arts – Modesto, CA

The Gallo Center for the Arts 2010-2011 season opener, featuring Michael Bolton, was captivating, reminiscent, inspiring, and heartfelt.  A man devoted to humanity, and an artist committed to performances from the genuine greatness that radiates within, this proved to be an evening that showcased both compassion and god given talent only a true-life hero could deliver.

From the moment lights faded to darkness and the instrumentals  from “Go the Distance” echoed through this magnificent venue with its spectacular accoustics, it was evident something far bigger than life was to be experienced.  As the introduction song continued, Michael’s captivating voice delivered lyrics sending the message of a man and his dream, on a journey, longing to share the immense passion of his gift and grateful for the discovery and honor bestowed upon him – his devoted fans.

The audience welcomed Michael with warm applause and the magical serenade began. The early mellow performances gradually increased intensity with smoothness, ease and vocal pizzazz. Judging by song choices, it was clear Michael aimed to please his fans with a bit of reminiscent selections from the past such as: “Sweet Home Chicago”, “The Dock Of The Bay”, “Summertime”, “Georgia On My MInd”, “Fly Me To The Moon”, “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You”, and “How Can We Be Lovers” - to name a few. “Hope It’s too Late” was a crowd pleaser from his more recent repertoire.

Michael’s sense of humor throughout the evening added a charm and light heartedness that reminded us he too is human. His finesse on the guitar was both spellbinding and energizing. During a brief break, Michael shared the phenomenal talent of Michael Lington.  A breathtaking solo performance on the alto sax by Lington was incredible. Michael’s introduction of a fellow great artist was sincerely appreciated.  When Bolton miraculously appeared in the middle of the theater to perform “When a Man Loves a Woman”, the lucky ladies in waiting swooned to his crooning in awe.

Michael’s flawless vocals flourished with his delivery of “Nessun Dorma”, an inspiring perfection that confirmed the magnitude of his talent. This earned him a standing ovation. When the lights once again dimmed and Michael stepped a bit further back on stage, his engaged eyes displayed a vulnerability of appreciation throughout his entire compassionate rendition of Hallelujah.  This heartfelt, standing ovation performance of gratitude could be felt in the soul.

The lights remained dim and the instrumentals of “Go the Distance” faded as the crowd cheered, and  Michael stepped to the back of the stage to bid his devoted fans a fond farewell, as he heroically departed to embrace his journey. Michael Bolton truly brings fulfillment of happiness with his singing and music and is deserving of the title – “a hero who touches the heart and soul”.
